I'll be getting back to putting $ into my truck shortly, and replacing the speaker should be on the list as I believe it's the factory original from 1978 and is rather sad.

So what's worth a damn that isn't terribly expensive? I don't need the best, just something that isn't a POS.

You and I are in the same boat... my car isn't from the 70s but its over 10 years old.  I think one speaker is blown and the other is falling out.  Not so good.  I'm also intrested in if there is any DIY stuff that I could do.

Budget?
What kinds of music do you listen to?
Do you prefer brite or warm?
Are you more into LOUD or GOOD (SPL vs Sound Quality)?

 8)

There are lots of options.  I've been researching this myself and am two weeks away from money to buy.  I'm going for higher-end speakers probably,  but I think I can offer some basic ideas.  Answers to above would help.

Vifa has some interesting DIY solutions for car audio that you might want to check into.

Have fun,

These look interesting... haven't heard any but they have a good rep, some have apparently been used in home speakers.

I don't know about bubba but I would prefer something that is warmer and has good sound quality.

I'm certainly no expert on car stereo, but I think the Infinity Kappa series are pretty damn nice car speakers.  The Kappa Perfect seems to be a passable sub, too, although you'd never know it by the fart boxes most kids load 'em into.

There's lots of decent car subs, but I'm not very interested in 'em.  I can't really see the point of having more than one 10" or 12" sub in a car, but that's just me.  Partly this stems from not wanting to waste a lot of money that I could spend on my home rig and partly from the fact that I have a convertible; no point in installing anything in a ragtop that you wouldn't leave sitting on the seat.

If you are looking for warm yet detailed, these are excellent... I just bought them, and WOW.  VAST improvement over the stock gear, and not nearly as brite, grating, and fatiguing as most car audio speakers:

I bought these from a dealer for $225 shipped.   8)   PM me if you're interested, and I'll pass along the contact info.

Hey guys, if you're looking for something cheap that'll sound better than your current gear, you could check out the Lightening Audio Bolt series speakers....I just replaced my car speakers with them a couple weeks ago, and they sound much better than the stock setup.

I find that the Bolts are very clear, and have a good center image.  I don't know how they image left to right, but they've got a great toe-tap factor!  ; ).  The problem is that the Sony CD deck I put in likes to sound blindingly bright, and very edgy.  I had to turn the bitch down 4 ticks on the treble to bring it back to reality.

Lightening Audio also makes a Strike series that is more of a competition type speaker, and I'd imagine that they would sound better in general than the Bolts, but they're quite a bit more.  Still, both speaks are bargain basement compared to our home stuff!

I haven't been here in ages, and this post is probably really old, but I'd like to put in my two cents on the newest fad in DIY car audio components.

The set consists of a Peerless CSX 6" mid, and an LPG D26NA tweeter.

I have had great success with this set, and recommend it as a cheap alternative to match up to even some of the best commercially available components out there.

My crossover point is at 3200 Hz. I found these tweeters do not like to play any lower than this before they start getting jagged, and the Peerless mid reaches break up soon after this also, either that, or it's response in car is just going all to heck.
