My Tact 2.2 took a crap!!!
« on: 5 Jun 2006, 10:58 pm »
Yesterday, out of nowhere, I started getting all sorts of (digital-like) popping coming from my speakers!  :o

At first I thought it my be my source ("Roku" like a squeezebox, streamed internet radio), but when I turned the source off, the noise continued  :(

I quickly turned everything off and then turned the amp on, it was quiet. Turned the tact on, it was quiet, turned the source back on...Quiet.

Within 5 minutes the noise came back   This time I tried swtiching the input selector on the tact and it went away when I selected any digital input without a connected source (in this case two sources). I then tried the analog inputs and the system was quiet. Back to digital... Noise.

I'm figuring that it is most likely not the power supply or else the noise would have been present while the analog input had been selected but something at the digital input stage.

I'm going to send it in to Tact (I'm sure they'll be able to sort it out)

Just kinda bummed, cuz I've got my RM30s coming this week with no pre.

Bummer. Do you have an unaltered/upgraded Tact?
Let us know how Tact customer service is.

The Tact is stock, but I am not the original owner and have no warranty.

I did speak with Tact today to describe the problem and ended up getting "Boz" himself on the phone (BTW: it's pretty great when you call a service dept and actually get to talk to the people who make the product !!!). He was super nice on the phone and although he seemed generally surprised/puzzled that I would have this type of problem at all, he assured me that the turn around would be rapid (couple of days tops).

Anyway I will update when there is more to know.

Continuation:

So, I've been running the system through the 2.2 for going on 3 hours now with no hint of previously described noise. Same inputs, etc.

I comepletely the unitdown (power switch at back) last night. Tonight, I figured that if I left the system running for several hours it would eventually come back and I could least try to give some sort of instruction or confirmation that the problem was there.

Now my concern is that if I send it back into Tact that the problem may not occur for them. A waiste of shipping costs and Tact thinking that I'm nuts cuz nothing is wrong with the unit.

My inclination is to run it for a few more days to see if issue pops back up...

Glad all is well, at least for now. You may as well run it and see what happens. Keep us posted and good luck.

Thanks! I hope that it was an isolated issue and maybe all that was needed was reset.
