SP2 & HDDVD Setup inconsistency
« on: 2 Jun 2006, 11:13 pm »
I went ahead and got the HDDVD player. couldnt wait anymore.

I have it plugged in the analog audio, and set the pre to bypass 5.1. Changed the crossovers to 80hz and sub to yes.

When I did the audio calibration on the toshiba setup, the front 3 speakers were fine, but the rear l/r were about 4 db's too low, and I couldnt increase the volume. When I got to the sub, it was almost nonexistant on their highest setting. is there something in the SP2 that I am missing???? i havent read any issues like this from anyone else!

The analog inputs on the Bryston unlike many receivers are not designed for bass management, etc.  So you're stuck with the adjustments in the Toshiba.  That's one reason why I'm not upgrading my 1.7 until the HDMI 1.3 issue is resolved and I can get a Hi-Def player to plug into the Bryston and use the Bryston capabilities.  RCA just announced an HD DVD player for $499 list now shipping to retailers.  Not sure if it is based on the Toshiba.  If the Toshiba no adjustment you may need a product like  http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=266-234  for the front channels?

Hello Dan,

Phil is correct about using the bass management in your Toshiba.  You will need 6 RCA to have 5.1 channel properly setup.  Hence, the word by-pass or straight through...no post processing from your SP2.  It is what it is.

Why not use the coax or digital input instead?  Are you using it for SACD or DVD-A?  Those are the only reason I can think of when using the 5.1 by-pass.

I am using the analog outs of the toshiba into the bypass 5.1 of the sp2. the rear channels and bass level are low. im gonna recalibrate the bass tomorrow using the volume on the sub if i have to but that wont help the rear speakers.

I wish you luck.

How are the levels measured when you us the SP2 calibration?

I would think the Toshiba has level controls for the channels along with test tones to adjust it via a SPL meter.

they do. it goes from 0 to -12. If my l/c/r speakers are set to -1db on 0, the rear speakers are @ -6db. Im going to calibrate the speakers to all be at -6, but that concerns me, as I already have to turn the bryston to -5 on POTO and -15 on Doom.

what I am curious about is, why doesnt anyone else seem to have this issue. is the SP2 doing something to the rear speakers to limit its output?

Ok, I just did the firmware update on the toshiba, and it allowed me to calibrate all of the speakers to an even volume. The sub is still an issue, but it is a problem with the player.
