Another Squeeze Box Review

I recently purchased the SB3 from Slim Devices, and I have it hooked into my system using the SPDIF out into m DAC.
I have a few overall general comments.
1. The amount of good jazz available is impressive. Far more than is available here in the Boston area. Other Public Radio Stations in the US are doing a great job of broadcasting via the net and playing some excellent stuff. Considering there's at least another dozen I need to add to my favorites, that's pretty impressive compared to what I'm used to.
2. The fidelity sucks and it's not the fault of the SB3, it's the bit rate reduction/compression. I will be using this only for background listening and when something catches my attention I will write down the tune and the artist and proceed to go get the CD.
3. Considering I am not using the analog out on this unit, building a linear supply for it is something I may get around to this winter.

Hello Dan,

I am glad you are enjoying the SB and internet radio.

RadioIO Jazz streams at 128k. They are one of the better sounding stations and the music selection is really VERY good.

KUVO here in Denver is consistantly rated in the top 10 of Jazz stations nation wide. Unfortunately their internet stream is very low fi.

I would be very interested in hearing your  thoughts on the sound of the unit  if you build a linear supply for it.

I'll second the RadioIO Jazz station. They have a great mix of jazz. The only thing I don't care for is when Dr. Mike, the station host breaks in at about twice the decibal level as the music. Keep the remote handy.

WRTI in Philly is pretty good and they played a lot Joey Defrancesco's new CD Organic Vibes last night and that's on my list of CD's to get.
Here's the web address: mms://205.234.246.10:80/wrti?MSWMExt=.asf

Would someone be kind enough to send the web address of the Denver station? I'm still pretty far down on the learning curve for this unit.

Dan, are you only listening to streaming Internet radio through your  SqueezeBox?  No wonder you think the fidelity sucks.  :)

I think most people consider Internet radio to be a nice, but minor feature of the Squeezebox.  The main reason people buy a Squeezebox is to listen to their CD collection which they're ripped, in lossless format, to a computer hard disk.  For listening to CDs, using the Squeezebox as a transport from their computer, and especially into an outboard DAC, most owners would consider its fidelity to be quite good.  And with the addition of mods, it can be a truly high-end product.

Well, beng the old fart that I am with about 500 CD's presently in my collection , I just don't have all that spare time to rip every one of my CD's and store it on a hard drive.  I have my old GD Transforms Transport and a DAC I designed and built about 8 years ago; so that is serving my playback needs at the moment and will continue to serve them until whenever.  I will be installing a 75 ohm relay in the DAC for more convienent switching between the two sources.
If that changes in the future or I get independently wealthy I may reconsider.
The Squeezebox is serving it's purpose, finding me new jazz that I may wish to purchase on CD.

Did I read correctly you have to pay monthly to get the 128k stream?
