Hi fella's
« on: 31 May 2006, 10:36 pm »
Hi there. I'm new to the forum, and am also a St. Louisian.
Just wanted to drop a note to introduce myself.

I've got an (almost) complete home theater set up in the house. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but can help occationally by telling why or why not based on my failures/acomplishments. Some of those being painful, some being expensive lessons.

I've got a webshots page linked below in my signature. Once there you'll find two 'albums', both with pictures of "my cave". Some overlap in the pics, but too busy with my toys and job to spend time organizing the pics.

Not a tube kinda guy (yet), but am also a member of 'another' forum that's VERY tube oriented. Those folks have given me the tube bug. Just not ready yet...

Thanks for your time
Bob

Hey Bob!
Welcome aboard!!

Right nice looking home-theatre spread you took pictures of.  Looks like you have the potential for some REAL house-wrecking bass!

I'm sure if you get out for 'a listen' with some of us,
you'll hear some decent tube stuff.
We don't rush things.

Thanks for saying 'Hey!' and hope you can make it out to one of our infrequent gatherings.

Best Regards,
DeadFish

Hiya Bob,

Welcome aboard. As you saw from my previous post I'm sorta new to the whole HT thing so I'm still learning about the video side of thngs.

On the other hand, two channel I know pretty well (as do the other twenty plus members of GAS) so if you need any help in that department, don't hesitate to ask.

I'll be sure to add your name to the email list. Your best bet is to check back here fairly frequently. Ususally if there is something happening, this is the first place to let the other GAS members know. Oh, and don't be afraid of the fact that we have 20+ members (actually its closer to 30), if you feel like hosting a gathering, just limit it to a set number of people, that way you don't get over run with bodies.

Welcome
I guess you can say I am a HT guy first but I will say that the tube bug has bitten me (no thanks to scott and deadfish  ) and music is a close second now.
I have the same PJ and the sanyo throws a beautiful picture. A visit to scott's is in order for sure. It is really 2ch nirvana.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, the new guys are always treated with respect around here

Hey Jamie,

I guess you could say I just got into HT (sort of neck deep).

You'll need to make a trip by to check out the new toys.

I described this whole Hi-Def TV thing to Blackmore tonight as Lowthers for your eyes  It really is pretty cool. I sure didn't expect to like it as much as I do.

Scott,
I got the lowdown today on the DLP, HD is amazing. The funny thing is Direct is not broadcasting at full resolution so it actually gets better! Did you get one of the new MPEG4 boxes? Direct TV is now offering local HD via the MPEG 4 box. I imagine you are a little too far to pick up OTA unless you have one hell of an antenna.
I am also under the impression that you have some mighty *bright* works of art, or rather speakers in for review and that you moved the aperions into the living room for HT use.
I need to get over there and check out the latest round of toys.
I also dropped you a PM about a DAC

Guys, Thanks for the warm welcome, and kind comments.
Looking foreward to mutual assistance and useless chat.

bpape, we've chatted before. Good to see a framilier name, sorry the 'other' deal didn't work out. Hope it goes well.

Deadfish, thanks for the complement. Yea there is ALMOST housewreckin' bass there. I'm currently in the middle of some mods to get lower hz, hoping for higher db's too. You know how that goes. I think Timex makes Dayton drivers... 'Cause I've beat the heck out of the back plates.

Scott, Thanks for the welcome. It's been my dream to have folks over to listen, view, and have a cocktail (or two...) but the WAF is fairly low in that department much to my dismay. She's seen too many Oprah shows, know what I mean...    But I respect her position. (still workin' on her though)

Jamie, Good to see a fellow Z2er. Beutiful machine is'nt it. Have you had any problems with the dust blobs everyone complains about?

Mike, Thanks for the complement!

Does anyone know why I have not received Email notifications about posted replies? I checked my profile and the email address is correct. And just below the screen I'm posting a reply right now has the notification box "prechecked".
Any ideas?

Thanks again
Bob

Audio Circle is in the middle of moving servers so there may be a glitch or two for a while until we make the full transition. Hopefully the new software will behave.

When it comes to lower bass for HT, you may want to consider the Adire line. I've got four (older) Shivas. Dan Wiggins makes one heck of a good sub for not much money. In a very old speaker design I dremt up I had a pair of Shivas in 9.75 cu ft enclosures. They were tuned to 16hz (and did it near flat). feeding them with a little better than 500 watts per side, I could literally blow candles out, send paper flying across the floor and nearly close the door that sat about three feet in front of them.    aahhhhh, thems the days

Scott, flat to 16 is only a dream for me at this point. I've got a VERY patient dude on, well, ummm (shhhh another forum) that is helping me mod my existing sub to get somewhere close to that.
If it fails, I just might be asking if you've got the plans laying around. I'd feel like a complete "you know what" if I drop him and said, 'forget you pal, and all the time you've spent, I'm going with this fella..'  Plus there's a few followers that may be interested in the outcome.

"thems the days"..... what do you mean, did you find something better than 16?

Actually yes. A few years ago I fell off the solid state wagon really hard. In fact I went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum with single ended triodes and Lowthers. If you look close you can see a pair of vintage, high efficincy 15" Goodmans filling in the sub duties behind the Lowthers.

Now, they don't drop any lower than about 25hz but the quality of the bass is light years better than the low efficiency drivers to my ears. Keep in mind, those are for my two channel system. I still use one of my Shivas in the HT though. It does a fine job when stuff blows up on TV

Jamie, I've got one of the new boxes from DTV. Depending on the broadcast, the local channels look pretty darned good. The dedicated HD channels come through really good too. Over the weekend they played a couple of old John Wayne movies, McClintoch and True Grit. They were awesome. Discovery HD has some programming that will take your breath away it's so stunning.

The cable guy said that by the end of summer, DTV is supposed to add another 20+ channels of hi-def stuff. I can't wait

Give me a buzz and we can talk about DACs.

Nice set up there Scott.

Hey, has anybody gotten radical and had a multichannel tube / high sensitivity drivers rig for HT? (audiophile HT)

Is the off white horizontal strip on the wall behind the drivers an absorbtion panel? If so is it DIY?

Yep. It's that perforated Rubber Maid shelf liner that you can buy at Wally World. It works really well to knock down the backwall (behind your speakers) reflection. It's a good cheap way to add some depth to the soundstage. It should work (nominally) on your first reflection points on the sidewalls too. Best part is it's cheap.

Wow Scott, holy rubber. I would have never thought of that. It does look pretty thin (compared to typical panels). Nessesity is the mother of invention, that's for sure! Good job. I've got quite a few "unconventional problem solvers" around my room too.

Hellos Sturgus, and Thank You for the kind words.

Hey Scott,
Those there components you show in the picture above.... are they yours or review pieces? What exactly do you personally own now? And where are the Radiis.

Hiya Bill,

Everything you see in the pick above is mine with the exception of the Yamamoto (sitting on top of my rack) which is Blackmores.

Here's the post I made with the review gear I have in house.
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=28051

As for the gear I personally own it's varied, long long list. Honestly I'd have to take inventory and theres probably too many pieces to list. If I had to put a number on it, I'd have to say somewhere near 50  to 60 pieces. Not all of it is high end and a good chunk is vintage.

As for the Radii's, they are sitting on the shelf since I've taken the Big Fun System apart. That end of the basement is going to get turned into my vinyl library and wet bar sometime this summer.
