Tube Research Labs D225 Solid State Amplifier

I had a discussion with TRL about the D225 transistor amplifier. According to them, this $4000 amplifier may sound better than their $85,000 dollar tube amplifier. Also, according to TRL, they have experienced most of what's available with solid-state offerings, and they feel very confindent that nothing currently available performs at the D225 level. This amplifier was originally designed to power large medical devices in a hospital setting before it arrived on the audio market.

Sounds like another intriguing product. I got that itch again!

There was a guy on Audiogon raving about this integrated amp, saying it was the best amp he had ever heard solid state or tube.

It sounded like the usual shill you find on Audigon, so I forgot about it. But please earlmarc, tell us if you get a chance to hear it.

Yap, I hear of it in person!  As far as I know, the company offers money back guarantee.  I heard it driving  a pair of Dynaudio C3  in comparsion to a pair of Krell KAS2 mono.  For these you aren't familiar with Krell KAS2,  Krell KAS2 are a pair of Class A beasts (150-lb each).  Once they are well fed with sufficient current and warm up (or should I say heat up), they exhibit the typical high-end pure Class A characterisitcs such as presenting a large and stable soundstage, playing back sound with a sense of ease, organic and slightly warm sound, and excellent bass extension and control.

In comparison, TRL D225 sounds a tad bit less warm.  It has better treble and bass extension. In Cello playback, the bottom octave are more apparent giving Cello a fuller and more complete sound. The attack and transients in dynamics in orchestral work are better also. It is also quiter and has a more black background. The triangle and cymbal have more shimmer.  The singers seem to able to take the decaying note a bit longer.  The transparency and presenation of airness are also better.   The body of music is a bit more focus and delineated, and has better density.  It also does get more out of the music. If KAS2's cast a large and stable soundstage with boundries and ease, TRL D225 casts a equivalent or better soundstage with less sense of the existence of boundary.  For peple who are familiar with or have heard of Goldmund  Ultimate series or above, you may also find some similarities. It will perform very well with speakers that don't like amp using negative feedabck (like old Dynaudio series). However, I still think some people may still prefer KAS2 over D225 for KAS2's warmer and textured sound, or in some systems where KAS2 may synergize better.

The chassis is a bit plain looking although I have heard it may get a new faceplate.  Judging on the sound itself, if it is being put in an nice aluminum chassis instead, my humble opinion is that it could definitely be sold for more than 10K+ and compete well in that league.

If you have no objection on how it looks and your budget is less than 5K, I would strongly recommend you check it out.   After you auditng it and if you find other amps under 5K that sound better than TRL D225, please inform me for I am very interested in knowing.   With my (limited) experience, this is my top choice (sonic-wise) under 10K thus far.

Good luck with your search!
