Maybe AudioCircle members don't keep speakers long enough to experience having the woofer foam rot away from age, but your friends probably have those Advents or ARs from the 70s and 80s and wonder why the bass is so strange, so if they ask you what they can do.  You can tell them about Wylie Williams at The Speaker and Stereo Store.

      Not only do I fix speakers I give free estimates and I don't charge the high hourly shop rates that service shops must charge because of their business expenses.  (There are advantages to being a home based business.)     And I like working on speakers. That sounds strange, but it's true, so I welcome speaker work even thought it's not a big money maker.  

    It makes more sense to use my services if you live in the Saint Louis area because packing and shipping will run up the cost, but I will do it for speakers from anywhere.  It's OK to call me at 314-692-2230 to get a rough idea of estmated costs.

Hi Wylie,

Great service you are providing. I wouldn't even attempt replacing the foam myself. But plenty audiophiles have much loved but deteriorated spkrs that can benefit from such a service.

And, being a greenie, I think it's really great to retrieve such a highly manufactured component rather than committing it to landfill.

One advice: If the box is made of particle board or MDF there is formaldehyde egress from these which accelerates the demise of these surrounds ( not real good for our lungs either) so it's a good idea to seal all internal cut edges and raw surfaces.

I had a friend who used to make speakers for a living using the most primitive of eqpt. I watched the colour drain from his face and he developed a constant bronchitis, ended up with a corpse-like pallour - then walked away from his w'shop and recovered. Colour came back and bronchitis subsided. Saved his life.
