OT--Unlocked Cell Phones
« on: 15 May 2006, 02:15 am »
Hey guys,

My cell phone is a piece of junk.  I'm not eligible for a phone upgrade yet--even if I was I probably wouldn't sign again with the same company.  I see these "unlocked" cell phones on ebay; anyone know if this is on the up and up or is the likelihood of getting burned pretty high?  Anyone ever purchased a phone like this from ebay?

Cheers,
Brad

I work in the business and can tell you a bit about this.  An unlocked phone is not altogether a bad thing, but there can be some drawbacks that make it a bit of a crapshoot.  If you toss out ebay seller issues, which may not be insignificant in terms of getting what is really described (new versus refurb, etc.), the main thing you're looking at is the phone you buy will likely not have your providers latest software version, this may mean some quirks or issues that can range from small (you get a text message of some bizzare symbol every time you check voicemail) to large (you don't have all the service functionality offered by your provider)

I have had friends buy phones off ebay and have no issues, moderates issues, and so many issues they tossed it after 2 days.  We buy them off ebay as routine steps in theft investigations, etc. and have seen the same range of good product to real crap.  So buy with caution off ebay.   Your better bet is to go to a smaller dealer network storefront (example, Phones To Go (not a real store but you get the drift), or any smaller store that sells mutliple carriers and models) and get to plug in your SIM card and see how it works there in the store before you buy it.  Some of these guys are pretty shady, but most are willing to deal.  You also have someplace to go back to if there are issues.  Good luck.

If you have cingular (ie already have an active sim card with them) I have a year old sony that I might let you have, I upgraded to a RAZR and it is setting in the drawer.
Also many companies will offer a free upgade middle of contract if you are a good customer and are nice on the phone to the CSR. Just an idea.
I have looked into unlocked phones and though I know many people who have purchased via ebay, I think I would rather buy a phone sans contract and pay a little extra.

Very nice offer, isn't AC a great place?

I also left off, if you do end up buying off ebay and want to have the phone flashed, contact me offline and I can maybe help with that.

Thanks for the offers Jamie and Arthurs.  I have a Motorola Vsomething.  The volume is so poor, I can't hear if I driving my car (granted my car is in a similar class to my phone).  Most of the time lately, I don't hear it ringing in the ear piece and note on the screen that it's connected but no volume.   I do have Cingular and on contract until Dec. '06, but am really unsure if I want to sign another contract to upgrade my phone.  I'm going to look around this week locally and see what I can dig up.   Thanks again for the offers, I may take you up on them.

Cheers,
Brad

Hi,  I am on my second used phone off ebay.  No problems at all.  I just bought a $300 phone for $80, less than a year old, looks brand new.  Took the new phone and old one over to Sprint and they upgraded the software on the new used phone and got me up and running in less than 10 minutes at no charge.  Do you have experience buying on ebay?  Do you know how to look at the buyer feedback?  Call or email me if you want some help?  Alex 314 504 8804
