wondering what r some tube favs for the cornet..

also specifically,, if anyone else has tried a 50's vintage CBS-Hytron 5814 in the cornet (II).. [these are the one's with the very upright horseshoe type getter.]

I usually don't get too excited about such things, but I was knocked over by this tube..

 I had tried a lot of tubes in my C-2, good ones even.. settled on a favorate here and there...all of which were blown out of the water by the CBS...

oddly,  I've never been too content w/ this tube in any other application...

also using tungsrams @ the ax7 ..

any other fav's?

My Cornet2 tube lineup hasn't changed for quite a few months so I had to check to see what's in there (too busy working+listening to mess with it).  This is what I've been running:

Mullard GZ34
GE 3-mica 5814
(2) Telefunken 12ax7

My 5Y3's were not indirectly heated and the voltages were somewhat low so I switched to the GZ34 that I already had... and I don't have too many 12au7 type tubes and haven't really done a serious comparison of the ones I do have...  but I do have a lot of 12ax7's (not tungsrams, though) and prefer the tele's in my system.   They have good detail with an even, balanced sound.

Where do you get your CBS-Hytron 5814's?  I'd be interested in trying them...

I'm using an older RCA 5y3 which I prefered to a sylvania which was the only other tube I've had in that position..

The CBS's I got were from ebay a while ago...I did not pay much for them.

fwiw, I did notice a pair for sale @ 75.00 (I think) from a guy in ebay 'stores'..the right ones..50's vintage. there's another, probably 60's vintage cbs, has a horshoe type getter, but much closer to the plates than the older ones... the latter is v good imo, but not quite amazing..

I thinks the guy on ebay has both btw .

I have telefunkens in my preamp, but haven't tried them in the cornet...

the tungsrams just have a tone that I really like. They're crisp, clear,,  if a bit lean, but v hight output + powerful sound...

I have contemplated putting them downstream, so I may try the tele's yet.

I have 2 CBS 5814's and one of the 12AU7's.  I tried one of the 5814's awhile back and liked it quite a bit.  So I picked up another and a 12AU7.  Very nice tube.  The new 12ax7M is also very nice.  

I always go back to the RCA 5Y3 as the rectifier.  Never tried a 5AR4 but I've tried a number of others.  The directly heated rectifiers seem better to me.

GE 5 Star 5751's with an RCA 5963 is what sounds good to me. Soundstaging in particular. I tried various RCA, Mullard and Telefunkens , all in 12AX7 or 12AU7. Is it that these "substitutes" are better sounding tubes or are they superior in design to the AX and AU?

Your rave about CBS-Hytron has me interested, now I gotta buy me some of those.

To date, my favorite tubes for V1 and V2 are various combinations of:
   Raytheon 12AX7 Black Plates, 1959.
   Tung-Sol 12AX7
   Sovtek 12AX7LPS (new production)

For the V3 position I like either:
   Amperex 7316 Holland  (these are the best!)
   Telefunken ECC82 (smooth plate)

My rectifier of choice is now Bendix 6106.  Used a vintage Raytheon 5Y3GT for over a year, it’s nice too.  I adjusted the resistor values to achieve the proper B+ voltage (R2 in my case).

My Classic Cornet has been tweaked to the max:  370BX tranny, constant current sink, boutique components throughout.   It’s the cornerstone of my great audio system.

I haven't built the Cornet yet, but plan to....'cept that I have heard time and again that 12a_'s suck. I thought about doing the octal version instead.  Anyone else try the octal in comparison?

I've been tempted to try an Octal version but too many projects in the pipeline.  A couple of other hybrid variations are also interesting. - keeping the 12AX7 and using a substitute for the 12AU7 - 6SN7, 12BH7, 6CG7.  The 12BH7 is pin compatable with the 12AU7 so it could be used with some minor adjustments for heater current and CCS or cathode resistor.  The 6CG7 is a 9-pin version of the 6SN7 and might also be worth considering.  Don't remember if it is pin compatable.

I have used this configuration and enjoy it immensely.

I also use this tube array on my CHIME

I quite enjoy the Mullard ECC83 and Mullard ECC82 + GZ34 I have in my Cornet, a really good combination

Other than the 5y3, what rectifiers can be used in the Cornet2?  I have a Philips Miniwatt GZ32 sitting around, and some 5u4 s.  

Currently running a Mazda 5y3.

The 370BX transformer is rated at 5VCT@2A so you could run a 5Y3 (2A), 5V4 (2A) or a GZ34 (1.9A), at least based on the 5V current ratings.  Although my C2 does not run hot at all I wouldn't exceed the transformer rating so that would rule out GZ32 (2.3A), CV378 (2.8A), and 5U4 (3A).
