Linksys WRT54GS---I give up!
« on: 1 May 2006, 07:14 am »
I have put countless hours trying to get this router to recognize my SB3 so I decided to try another router and need some recommendations for a very user friendly unit. I can access the music files on my computer via ethernet but not be online at the same time. Wireless is hopeless. :( Perhaps an addresses conflict, I don't know but I'm looking for a router that is plug and play and will recognize the SB3 without having to go through endless configuration problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't take this the wrong way, and not knowing you're set up, the point may be moot. Copper has been around for a long time. It works well. I determined, after watching the amount of heartburn caused by wireless problems in the Slimdevices forum, that an ethernet crossover cable is the way to go. If your main concern is the quality, and reliability, of your music system, you will find a way to get it done. While wireless technology is a great concept, its not ready for prime time, especially in a crowded 2.4 mhz world.

Hmmn, I have had this router now for 8 months, and use it exclusively with my SB3, wirelessly.

Mind you, I did replace my cordless phones with 5.4GHz Motorola's and I use channel 11, etc, all to mitigate the signal droppage etc.

Sorry to hear that is has been a PITA for you...

Don't give up.  The convinience of wireless is worth the effort.  I use the notoriously finicky D-link 624 with a Linksys relay and they work fine.  I, too, changed my phone to 5.4 MHz just in case.    I am no network wizard and had to buckle down with the router manual for a day to get it to work.  The wireless streaming has hiccups but you won't notice it in playing music due to generous buffer size on SBs.  I have not tried the wired to see if it's better soundwise but I like the fact that I can keep my noisy computer 2 floors away.  I bet it's something very simple that you are overlooking.  Once you figure it out you will go  :slap: and feel    .  You would then say wireless   .

Two things:

1) I have a Netgear 614 that now works wonderfully with my SB3.  A little cheaper than the Linksys, and while I used to think Netgear's management software stunk, the new stuff is as good IMHO as Linksys.

2) BUT, my SB3 would not work with ANY router wirelessly while it had firmware 25 or 27 or something like that.  Once I plugged it in with a network cable in the office, and had it download version 3X(?), it worked LIKE A CHARM when I then went back to wireless.  I think 27 or 29 had some major networking fixes that made wireless come to life in my SB3.

Good luck!  Let us know how it turns out!

Sorry to hear that. I hate it when things that should be simple are anything but.

I've also used this router for about 4 months without any problems. I even use a laptop with wireless card to control Slimserver (running on my PC).   I agree it is probably something in the configuration unless you just got a bad piece of hardware. Have you tried resetting it to factory defaults and starting over....or have you been down that road many times?

Thanks to all for your ideas and encouragement. I will sit down tonight and hack away at it again. :banghead: Yes, I have reset it to the factory default many times.
Maybe it is a firewall that is causing my problems. Originally I had the Zone Alarm firewall but when I called Squeeze tech support they said that they were having problems with it so I deleted it and started using the Windows firewall which I configured to accept ports 3484 tcp, 3484udp and 9000tcp. Perhaps Zone Alarm is not completely deleted and is still causing problems with some hidden files or whatever.

If I don't have success tonight I will bug Squeeze tech support again and maybe give Linksys a call also. At this point, I would happy to just get it to work with the ethernet connection and also be able to surf at the same time and connect with the Squeeze network. Konut, if I use a crossover cable, do I net some sort of hub to interface with my computer :?:

How about running with firewall disabled and no encription to see if your SB3 is recognized?  You will know if firewall/encription is the culprit or not.............

I will give that a try. Sometime in the past I might have tried that but then something else might have been out of kilter. I think that I have a little better grasp of the issues involve now.

Thanks,

Raja,
Using a  Linksys  wireless  i can not get  connection  with  encryption.  Without it it's no problem  -  so  at  least  I know  where i  need  to work.  I initially had  a problem with Zone Alarm too and changed a  setting  within  Zone Alarm to  allow access and have had  no  problems ( with  no encryption) so i'm  guessing  that there is no  "ghost  "  effect  from  Zone  Alarm contributing to your  problem.
next i'm going to  try  changing  firmware...

Raja,
I'll start off by noting that i do not know what i am doing, so some of my results may just be superstitious  behaviour:

I downloaded the new  slimserver 6.2.2.
After installing  it prompted me to update firmware (by holding down brightness button)
( I was on firmware ver 29, now on  48)

Via my linksys (wusb54g) interface i  tried  changing to WEP - worked.  tried WPA personal, worked. tried  PSk2 -didnt work.  Went back to WPA -  didnt work...? *
However, i do not  know is  encryption is  actually working?  the SB does not prompt me  for a  key.  ( if  doesnt prompt for a  encryption  type either  but i think the  new  6.2.2 is supposed to autodetect this)

So  either  I dont actually have   encryption active  - and it is  running without encryption - as it did anyway when i used no encryption.  The SB info says "no encryption."  It also  says SB2 (  on a  SB3)

*when the SB didnt  work when i returned to WPA  - i noticed on the linksys dialogue box that  I wasnt actually getting a  connection to the access point!.  A  restart and  a bit  of  frantic clicking  fixed that.. then  the SB  connected and  KD  Lang started singing Hallelujah.

If you have the same Linksys interface (has  3  tabs  across  top - "Link info" "Site Survey" and  "Profiles".  Under  profiles  (where i can edit my setup) it  says  WPA  encryption.  Under the Site Survey tab it says  disabled.??  watch the "link info" tab for  a connection.  (i know this sounds   obvious)

Sorry, i am just not up to dismantling  the setup to try  again piece  by piece to find out what made it  work.

Next i  need to find out if  encryption is  actually working.  But for now  at least the sound is flowing.

Anyway  that was my wee hack around for the night... for  what it is or isnt worth.

Thanks fu man for you  insights.

Unfortunately I can't mess around with the  SB right now because I need the computer for other purposes but when the stockmarket closes.......

It appears that you and I have been in the same boat. Congratulations on making it work but be careful :nono:  not to upset the fine balance or you may be back in the deep muddy again. :(
