What would you do with this room?
« on: 30 Apr 2006, 04:26 pm »
I'm almost finished wiring my room (loft) and now I need to begin considering built in acoustical treatments.  I will be able to hang surface treatments after the loft is finished so for now I'm wondering if there is anything I can do as far as 'built-in' or large installation type treatments.

The listening room dimensions are as follows:

*45 ft wide, completely open with only a kitchen island interrupting this width.
*23ft deep, with a enclosed hallway (10'highx4'widex 30'long) disrupting the open space on the back wall (see pics)
*14ft high ceiling on left side tapering to 12ft on right side.

More details:

1.   I will be sitting midway down the 45 ft length so there will be about 20 ft open on my left and right side before waves hit the first refelection point.  the speakers will fire across the 23' area which will actually be 18' since there is a hallway wall behind the listening position.
2.  The enclosed hallway walls were built using alternating stud pattern so as not to couple the inner and outer surfaces.  Drywall will be hung on sound channel to further aid acoustics behind listening area.
3.  Finished surfaces will be a 50% mix of sheet rock and raw brick.

Here are some pics:
This picture shows the wall where the system will sit.  The rear of the speakers to the brick wall. This wall is 45 ft long, I will look at this wall when listening.

This pic shows the hallway behind the listen area.  I will be sitting near the small ladder on the wood framed wall.  Above the hallway is open...a good place for permanent treatmens?

Thanks for the help you guys are giving along my journey.

Chris,

Wow, that's huge. The good news is large rooms have fewer bass problems than small rooms. The bad news is you'll need a lot of treatment to handle such a large space. You could focus the treatment around the area you'll play music, but that's not as good as treating all of the far-away walls and corners because that's where the majority of reflections come from.

On that 50/50 wall maybe you could have the sheet rock stand out about 6" and fill it with compressed fiberglass.  Leave the sides open (grill cover).  stager this every 4' or so??

Have you thought about calling Rives?

Maxcast, who is Rives?

Ethan, what would be the effect of covering the top of the back wall with a layer of thick rigid fiberglass?  I have an area of 4' x 30' on top which will just have accent lighting and the top surface is not visible from any location in the loft.  Thhe code guys are being very strict about what I do inside this wall. Since it is actually a hallway (corridor) which leads to the second loft I cannot do much accept hang treatments on the face of the vertical walls.  I altered the architects plans by staggering the studs in the corridor wall....man did that piss off the inspectors.

Because of the size of this room it may be best to think about a mix of broad band absorption, diffusers and tuned bass traps.

I gave serious thought to having the system fire down the longer area. Infact I had the electrician install dedicated circuits there too but because of the open floorplan I really need a place to sleep and I figure I'm going to have one hell of a time convincing my partner that her and I will be sleeping in the dining room.

Because I am a woodworker I can build most of everything that goes into this space.  I would like to build a couple large diffusers (??) from various pieces of exotic cutoff lumber I have naccumulated.  Is anyone aware of a goog DIY pattern for the type of diffuser that looks like a birds eye view of a city skyline?  You know, the kind with pieces of wood or other material that stick out at various depths and follow some kind of mathamatical formula.

Thanks
Chris

With the time and effort you are putting in this room it may be worth it.
Starting at $1k and moving up.

Acoustic treatment is about surface coverage. So you shouldn't treat all of one small area and ignore everything else. Best is to spread it around evenly.

That's not a problem because acoustic treatment goes inside the room, not behind the walls.

This site has a program you can download to design all sorts of cool diffusors:

Thank you very much for the link!

The whole thing is a dedicated listening room with a hint of WAF involved

Link to plans for 12"x12" diffusers and at bottom of page link to
kit of larger version. Get the larger kit and duplicate in your favorite
exotic wood...
You may be able to upscale plans to any size you need. Maybe??

Also link to finished 12"x12" diffusers and at bottom of page link to
30 diffusers being made and assembled.
