There must be some difference between how they process the digital signal for each of the versions, else there wouldn't be any discernable sound difference.  I doubt what they're doing would affect jitter, though.  Jitter is a deviation from when something should occur.  It is unlikely that their software can affect jitter, which is determined usually by random processes within the chips/clocks themselves.

Has this ever happened to you:  After a CD is ripped, you attempted to play the entire disc which holds 11 tracks.  After track #8 playing is completed, nothing you can do to have the squeezebox or the Slim Server to continue playing the track #9 on.  Going to the folder, clicking on those suspicous tracks easily verify they are playing fine with WMA player.  Deleting and re-ripping those tracks didn't do any better.

Any clue what's going on?  This is very frustrating.

That happened to me once...it seems as though Slimserver didn't find all of the music...in other words, it seemed to have been doing its scan for new music while the CD was being ripped and moved on before it was done.  Re-scanning for your music fixed it for me...

Hi all,

As a long time SB user (first time poster    ) of 2+ years--which includes a Squeezebox (1)--I just wanted AC Squeezebox owners to know that since migrating to Slim Server 6.2.2 (6.3.1 maintainance actually) with firmware 48, I have gleefully been enjoying the most stable
SB connection I have ever had.

It is true that I have not been as concerned with the issue of firmware 15 sounding better as many of you have, but rather connectivity and reliability in daily use. It is now (for me anyway) possible to use Random Mix and play songs as long as I desire without hiccups!

I would say that since updating the software, I have had no more than 2 or 3 minor glitches a week and the unit always reboots right away. In my experience this is a tremendous improvement. It has made my newly modded SB2 an even greater pleasure to use and begins to move the SB in a more user friendly direction with less necessity to have a computer geek on call 24/7!

While I'm glad the bugs have been worked out with version 48... I'm even happier to have 0 issues per week wired.

I've used 2 SB3's, one is a 'wireless' and the other is 'wired-only' but I've used both wired only since I don't have a wireless network.  (I've been comparing modified vs. unmodified.)

I've had 2 or 3 minor glitches over the past 4 or 5 months I've had them... 2 of which were likely my fault... Both will play random songs flawlessly for weeks.  I never turn it off, I just it keep playing and switch the connected amp on and off when I want to hear tunes.

So, good luck to wireless users... I highly recommend trying the wired-route if you can.

You are right of course about wired. But it seems that every time I get my system in a place where I could run an Ethernet, I move it!   Perhaps one day...


Actually, I overstated the glitches just because I didn't think anyone would believe that I have so very, very few. I have played my unit on random for several days once or twice without any problems as well. However, spring storms in my neck of the woods do not play well with any computer or electronic system, so it has conked out on me a few times. Still, to have so few problems has really made me a happy camper.

The sound quality of both my RWA and the Boulder modded units is so good and the convienience of PC-based audio so astounding (onc  e the ripping is mostly done   ), that I am enjoying more music than ever. I doubt I can ever go back...

Revisiting this old thread, I just got my system set up for less than a month, I have a RWA fully modded SB3, today I played with  different firmware version from v15 to v48, I'm afraid I simply have to agree to the "hype" - that version 15 indeed image better than all the other newer versions. Version 28 (and above) sounded too loose, less focus to me. Apparently there're still many skeptics, particularly in the slimdevices forum about the "superiority" of version 15.

When listening to version 15, I didn't reversed the polarity of my speaker wires, admitted I'm a bit paranoid that it may blow my speakers

The latest version I have is 55 - I still like 15 better.  I was wondering why my system sounded lifeless and then remembered I just installed the latest Slimserver - I changed back to 15 and the magic was back

I think the only explanation is that these guys at the slimdevices doesn't have a system resolving enough to tell the difference.. I don't think I have a "golden ear", but even then the difference between v15 and the rest are pretty audible. I've been using v15 most of the time, I used to think that the difference between v15 and the rest is the volume loudness - that v15 sounds louder than other version when set at the same scale. But I was wrong. Even my wife can tell that v15 has more focus, tighter sound than the rest.

I ran my SB3 straight into my Bryston 4B-SST into Salk HT3... I would dare anyone come to have a listen if they can't hear the difference, then they need to go and get their ear check-ou.

I read earlier  that version 15 has it's phase inverted.  Does someone knows if this is for both digital out and audio out or just the later...  I had inverted the bananna plugs one my speakers in order to get the best of my RWA audio out with firmware 15 but I have just added a DAC...

p.s. BTW, I just redid the tests with different versions of the firmware and version 15 if still the OBVIOUS best.

It only affects the analog outputs. If your SB has original or replacement op-amp on the output then the phase will be inverted with fw v.15 and correct with the newer fw releases. If the op-amp has been removed (Bolder Cable mods and some RWA mods) then it will be correct with v.15 and inverted with anything newer.

That's strange.  I am only using the digital out, and I loaded version 15 and the sound is recessed, kinda like if your speakers were out of phase.  I swapped them over, and the sound is restored....and it is better than version 55 as far as I can tell.

I downloaded the firmware selector and Net 1.1. I chose version 15 by typing 15 into the selector box. Next I pressed and held the brightness button on the SB remote to update the firmware but it did not load and I'm still stuck with version 55. Any help would be appreciated.
