Ipod and dumb question
« on: 29 Apr 2006, 03:55 pm »
Hi guys:
I'm think about getting a 30gig Ipod and transfering my PC music to it. I use the windows media player system to download music to my computer. It's simple to use and that's what I like. SIMPLE!!

Will I run into any glitches transfering music to the Ipod? Does the Ipod require something other than windows media player storage to download?

I should go find a teen age kid and ask him or her. They know everything!!

                                  Cheers

Hi Charlie,

The iPod uses iTunes software to BOTH rip music to your computer and transfer it to your iPod.  You can download iTunes for free:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/overview/

iTunes is very simple to use...

Vinnie

Vinnie:
Thanks for the info. But can I transfer the music I know have on my PC to the Ipod without starting all over? All my music is downloaded to the windows media player. I think it's a WMA process.

                                Cheers

Hi Charlie,

The iPod won't accept Windows Media Files, but if they are .wav or MP3 files, you should be able to import them into iTunes.

Use iTunes to convert WMA to what iPod can understand.

Check out Woot.com. Their special today is a 40Gb Toshiba player. Dont know anything about it but it plays WMA.  Or, if you are not familiar with the site, just take a look....its addictive.

So I downloaded itunes to my computer and figured out how to import the WMA files. It took 9.5hrs. to transfer 1863 songs. While this was going on I couldn't use the computer. I read somewhere here that someone has 1100 CD's downloaded to his computer. I only have 166. Can you imagine how long it would take to import 1100CD's!! No big deal for me but others might not like this.
I guess now it's off to the store to get a 30gig ipod.
I'm doing this so I'll have tunes to listen to on long airplane flights.
 Wish me luck!

                                      Cheers

Thanks about woot.com. Toshiba makes very good products and I'll give this one a good look before I buy anything.

Personally I would buy the iPod.  My wife has one and it is very easy to manage and play. Of course all of my music is in Apple Lossless. But for the money and for someone with a lot of WMA (well, not anymore it sounds like) this might be a good alternative.

Of course you also may want a good set of headphones for the plane. If you're okay with earbud, Shure has some of pretty good quality. There are others mentioned somewhere here on the forums.

This is like opening a can of worms!!! One thing leads to another. I'm kind of leaning toward the ipod mainly because every body has positive things to say about it.
Shure headphones!! Haven't heard that name in years. My turntable has a Shure V15 type 1V cartridge.
I'll look into the headphones. No rush for me. Don't need tunes for a few more months.

I don't get it!
I moved all my tunes from WMA to itunes so I could use an ipod. Just kind of looking at things in itune and Windows media player I see that Windows media player tells me that my downloaded CD's take up 11.11Gb of space. Checking the same thing in itunes it says 7.66Gb of space.
I don't get it!
