Biamping RM2's
« on: 25 May 2003, 03:06 pm »
Hello,
I have just recieved my set of RM2 kits. I wish to biamp them, with tube amplification on the ribbons and a large solid state amplifier for the woofers. I have on order a Marchand XM26 2-way tube type electronic crossover. What crossover slopes and frequencies should I use for the woofer to midrange crossover? I can set the Marchand up for 6,12,18 or 24 db slopes and can stagger crossover points. I intend to use the supplied passive crossover for the mid to HET tweeter crossover.
Thanks in advance!

24db is what you want.  It will reverse phase 180 degrees, so if you flip the leads for the mids/highs, you will preserve phase coherency.

Actually the 4th order crossovers cause a 360 degree phase shift.  2nd order crossovers cause a 180 degree phase shift. :)

Bypass the passive internal LP XO.   Use 24dB LP, around 150Hz or thereabouts, tune by ear.  24dB shifts 360 above the hinge, 0 below.  Leave all polarities normal.  For HP, use the active 6dB at 166Hz, in conjuction with the passive internal XO, as per my biamp document sent earlier.
