1080p - Opinions?
« on: 17 Apr 2006, 11:30 pm »
Hiya guys,

Not too far down the road, I'm planning on upgrading my TV and I've been on the prowl looking at the new models. Several of Mitsubishi DLPs my wife and I have been looking at feature 1920x1080 resolution. We were leaning in the 1080p direction but then today, John Hillig of Musical Concepts sent me this link.

http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages_b/reality.html

The author claims that even though 1080 is capable out of the new TV's, no movies or digital streams are being broadcast or recorded at this resolution (its more involved that that but you need to read the article) and they may not be broadcasting or recording at that resolution for quite some time.

Since we are going to pull the trigger in a new TV (likely 60" or larger) sometime in the next couple of months, if what the author states is true, I can save (more than) a few bucks on our purchase.

Have any of you HT experts got any opinions?

TIA

Scott,

The author is pretty much correct in terms of 1080 content and the current state of things.

If you are buying 60" or larger are you going PJ or RPTV?

If you go PJ, spend $2500 or less on a 1280x720 model.  This will allow you to enjoy a great image for the next few years while things get sorted out without investing too much.

I was thinking Rear Projection for a few reasons.

First, we are planning a major addition to our house for late summer early fall. We'll have a dedicated Family/HT room that will be fair sized. The 62" (or maybe just a tad bigger) seems to be just about the right sized based on the way the room lays out (seating positions).

Next, our old rear projection is on its last leg and we'd like to replace it before we get started on the addition.

I thought about PJ but it won't work in our current room very well. That and I'm not sure I can get enough light out of one of the 'light canons' to overcome the windows we'll have in the new room. Sure, I could add black out curtains but we don't want to have to close the curtains every time we go to watch TV when the sun is up.

Ok, I would try to grab one of last year's 720P JVC D-ILA models.  Since everybody is pushing the newer 1080P, you should be able to get a good deal on one.

480 line displays let you input 480p digitally, even when sources were 480i.

720 line displays let you input 720p digitally, even when sources were 480i, 720p or 1080i.

Why shouldn't 1080p ?

HDDVD & BD will store 1080p on the disc and output it over HDMI (just not this month!)

DVD players now output 1080p over, and hidef will follow.

1080p displays internal processing of 1080i up to 1080p is usually deficient, that''s why you should have 1080p HDMI inputs.

Ignore that infamous, silly, mis-informed and grossly misleading article.

I'm using the new Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player sending 1080i to a Gennum scaler, de-interlaced to 1080p (true inverse telecine), and then to a Sony Ruby projector (1080p native projector).

It's 1080p today, and it's the best picture I have ever seen.

It better be for that kind of money.
