tempest with remote that fails to respond
« on: 15 Apr 2006, 03:57 am »
Hi, All,

Been using my new tempest and stratos extreme SE (monoblocs).

I've noticed that if the tempest sits for a long period like overnight
and the first time you attempt to use the remote, it fails to
respond.  If you keep pressing up and/or down, eventually, after
a minute or two it responds BIG TIME - it appears that all of the
commands you have entered during this time are queued up -
as the volume will blast ever upwards.  It's a mad rush to
reach the volume pot and turn it back down.  From this point
on, it works great...until the next long period of inactivity.

It's as if the microprocessor needs a reboot or an interrupt.

Power cycling fails to make any difference.

Though it was  batteries - changed them - no effect.

As I said, once it responds with the queue of commands from
pressing the remote ALOT - it works great from there on.

Anyone else experienced the same or something close.

YES, Klaus builds some great gear!  My first three pieces of
Odyssey equipment AND definitely not my last.

Had just ordered a set of Khartago's, but cancelled and ordered
the tube preamp for the other system.  Will order another set of
Stratos Extreme SE's when savings allow...they are SO nice!

Tempest remote - plot thickens!

Hi, All,

Found cause: normally, the tempest is left on all the time.  However,
when things "end" for the day/evening, the volume is turned all
the way down and the source component is powered off.

The powering off of the source, a Motorola HD-cable DVR, is the
culprit.  Just prior to turning it off, the volume control on the tempest
responds to remote commands.  Turn off the DVR, and apparently, the DVR sends crap down the audio interconnects which trashes the state
of the remote control microprocessor.

With the other audio systems we have, it's the proper power-up and
power-down sequence (source, dac, pre, xover, amps and vice versa
for powering down).

I REALLY hate having to power cycle the tempest because
the wife might turn things on in the morning for as little as five
to ten minutes which means a very short duty cycle for the
equipment.

Suggestions - well, realistic ones, that is?

Cheers,

Lon

Yes, indeed - following the proper power-on/off sequence
does eliminate the micro in the remote control "board" from
getting trashed/hosed by powering off the Motorola HDTV DVR.

Unrelated: Am getting the Khartago's - saner (or is it more insane!)
minds realized that these puppies can always be used in the
next system.

I never power my HD DVR off, but I have a lot of problems with commands hanging up with it.  Hopefully Comcast will have the TIVO units soon.
