Is this too loud?
« on: 14 Apr 2006, 05:33 am »
Out of my fear of breaking my Odyssey Cyclopes, I was wondering if I could possibly damage the amp because of turning it up too loud. The reason I'm asking this is that sometimes when I'm watching movies I sometimes have to crank the amplifier to 3-4o'clock to get a decent volume. I worry that running at this level for 2-3 hours straight will somehow overheat and blow up the amp. So is this risky behavior?

I would think that you would damage one or both of the speakers before the amp. If you had a sound meter, you could measure exactly how loud you are listening and may even prevent damage to your equipment or your hearing.
Give Klaus a call, he would be the best one to ask.

I'm sure its not too loud SPL wise. I guess what I'm referring to how some movies are mastered really quietly and me having to crank the Cyclopes to 3, 4, even sometimes 5o'clock to get a decent volume. When I listen to music, I usually don't have to turn the knob past 11-12o'clock. This seems like an odd question, but I don't wanna risk damaging my baby

How is your system set up?
Are you using a receiver in there somewhere?
Can the channel levels in the DVD player be adjusted?

My system goes like this:

WinDVD > EMU-0404 Sound Card > Lite Audio DAC-AH > Odyssey Cyclopes Amplifier > Odyssey Epiphony

I've set my WinDVD's volume to maximum and my EMU-0404 volume at -1.0db mainly because some cd's I have make the red "clipping" light go off. Even if I've set it to 0.0db there isn't a major difference in volume.

I don't know what WinDVD or 0404 is but I gather it is the output of a computer DVD drive.  It may be lower than the standard of 2.0 volts which would make you have to turn that source up more than a 2.0 volt source.

I don't know how high the Cyclopse goes but the old rule of thumb was if you  turn up your amp 70% and need more, you need more watts.

ill bet its a symptom of the unit-watched a dvd with my new candela hooked up to the tv and i had to crank  till it got to a decent volume,it takes very little when running my cdp or tuna-so its a quirk i guess  :o
