any preferences to brand or whether it sounds ok with low output mc, or does it need more gain ?

tx
(also, how does one remove the tempest cover ?
obviously I know the 4 hex screws underneath but I took these off and the cover is still not removing )

Well to remove the cover, you have to flip it over, unscrew the hex nuts and slide the whole cover off towards the back...from front to back.

on something and does not slide off. It moves about 1/8 inch and stops :?
I have removed many covers before this one stumped me.

It should slide off just fine.
There must be some dampening that Klaus has put on the top side of the inside of the cover, try proping it up right where it gets stuck and then slide it off.

You may have to lift the cover a bit too...there is a rubber like strip on the cover that may be catching.

The Tempest seems to get along quite well with my Shelter 501.

Good to know, thanks for the insight.  I just ordered a 501MkII, can't wait to put it on my scout table.

What other cartridge have you had with the Tempest?

My Tempest works well with both my Denon DL304 and DL103D :)

The 501 is it...you'll love it with your Scout.  What tonearm do you have? It seems to work best with the Signature arm due to its heavier weight (based on feedback I've received) but I think the 3 gram headshell weight helps the tracking with the 501 on my standard JMW9

Denon DL103R works nicely, and the cart. is very low gain MC.

Hey Nature,

I have a Van den hul Frog with the Extreme Tempest.  Sounds fucking great.  I also have a 'standard' Tempest - have not tried the Frog with the unit, I upgraded the other Tempest as part of the cart upgrade plan.  My 'guess' is huge difference between the two Tempest models w/respect to analog.  If you are considering a similar output cart, I could do an A/B between the units.  Again, I am certain the Ex does a better job.  Let me know - access to swap the units is not too bad.

thanks all posters for input.
and thanks for your offer Don.
I imagined the frog would sound great, after all Ody has working relations with van den hul...
I am going to try one of the mc adcom from underwood on audiogon.
He is selling nos at a good price.
It is not in the same league as the frog of course.
