MLS RM 30 cabinets arrived yesterday, after a week in customs, and are in the process of Soundcoating.  Those who have been waiting, well, we should ship the first of them in 10 days or so.

Ap 17-18 I will be away, hearing VMPS'er Soundguy3 sing the lead in Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.  John is a great voice and a major artist--we heard his Dr Bartolo in "Barber" at the Met in Nov 2003, and it was a memorable evening (I reported on it at AA, check the archives there if interested).  He sang the "Don" in Houston for the first time in Jan 2006, to rave notices.  John is a regular at the Met, having appeared there over a hundred times since his 1993 debut.

Our only disappointment is that James Levine was scheduled to conduct all 9 "Don's", but cancelled after a fall necessitated rotator cuff surgery.

BTW I once coaxed John into singing a Rossini aria solo in the "live" end of my sound room, and I must confess my audio equipment could not begin to reproduce that huge, resonant voice.  Sigh.

I remember in the old Playboys I used to read ( 8) ) when I was but a teen, they used to have Dewar's (Scotch drinkers) Profiles.

Well here is an RM40 owner's profile.

VMPS RM40 Owner's Profile

John Del Carlo -

Occupation: American bass-baritone

Passion: Music

Speaker: VMPS RM40

Below is a link to a bit of information about John

Personal; John is a great guy and lives in the Pacific NW.  He has been a VMPS client for several years, and is a pleasure to work with, and an all around great guy.

I remember it did take some time and patience to help him achieve the best from his speakers, which was then taken a step further by a personal visit by Big B, himself, which led to a longstanding friendship, and of course this current trip.

B, tell John D, I said hello

This is a cool story!  Glad to see musicians are interested in hearing music in the most emotional way possible.

Er, that's John del Carlo.  His agent's website has a nice bio and list of credits.

Since that pic was taken John has been dieting and is down about 60 lbs!

I asked John how close the RM 40's came to recreating live sound. He looked at me and nodded his head saying they come pretty close.

Being as he's listened to live music all his life getting a positive response from him at all had been very impressive. I listen to live music too but I can't hold a candle to someone's opinion who has been doing it for a living for decades.  I know he's been very happy using these speakers.

I'd like to hear a cd of his then him do the same piece to see what real world difference there is.  A voice like his must be one of the most difficult things for a speaker to reproduce so it would be a good contrast.

That's already happened.  When my wife and I visited his PNW home a little over two years ago, we spent about three hours dialing in the system and removing sonic impediments such as small pieces of furniture from the near field.

After we finished, I noticed Dr Bartolo's music from "Barber of Seville" on the piano.  John had a copy of the Callas/Galliera performance with Fritz Ollendorf as the Doctor.  I wanted John to critique Callas, but as soon as Bartolo's music started, John (sitting about 3 feet behind me) started singing along at full voice!!  It was one of those priceless moments, hearing Rossini live-vs-recorded in front-to-back stereo.
The speakers reproduced Ollendorf well, John was suprised his Italian was so good (Ollendorf is German), and both live and recorded performances were outstanding.

However, John singing Bartolo at the Met with full orchestra, five other soloists and chorus, heard from Orchestra row C, was an entirely different matter, not reproducable in the home.

I'll work on it.

Wow, at this rate, I am going to have a fan club here!  :D

Thanks for all the attention and as I said in the other post, it was good to see the Cheney's at the Met, they had a great time and so did I!

Warner, at some point I will have to have you over to work some of your magic on my RM 40's.  Will call you when time permits.

Thanks John C for the blurbs. :)

Happy Listening!
