SB3 problems
« on: 10 Apr 2006, 01:13 am »
I have three stock SB3s and recently lost power due to a storm. After the storm two SB3s reconnected fine.
The third one I am having problems with. I unplugged it and let it set for 20 minutes. After setup if finds my network and the computer (win xp) which is running slim server.  But it will not connect to slim server. I get the message unable to connect to slim server then the unit powers down.
It is a wireless unit. It was connected via a surge protector and the protector did not trip and everything connected to it works fine. I can power it on and run through the setup menu. Any ideas?

Thanks

Are you using DHCP or static IP addresses? I seem to recall reading a couple of posts a couple of months ago about SB's dropping their IP addresses....or was it the wireless network password ...hhmmm, can't recall.

If you are not already using static IP addresses, I would change to this immediately. Seems to cause less problems. Also check that the wireless network security password is still there and correct.

The fact that your other 2 SB's connected to the SlimServer OK indicates that the router and SlimServer box are fine. I'm assuming that the problematic SB is receiving a strong enough wireless signal.

I went through this  last week and after much Audiocircling, got the suggestion to turn off encryption on my router. That worked. Don't know why. And FWIW, it went out again in mid-week, after I had restored encryption and was stable. So now I have it turned off and haven't turned it back on yet.

Well I set up IP address via static as DHCP was selecting an IP address not on my network (169.xxx.xxx.xxx vs 192.xxx.xxx.xxx) even though it is finding the computer (wilco) and the network (phish) that the slimserver is running on. Thought for sure this would work. I got a could not connect to slimnetworks message instead of slim server message.
I am getting a littl upset. I think I am going to reload everything on my server and then try again. It bugs me when 2 out of 3 work but the last one doesn't!

Check to make sure the MAC address printed on the bottom of the SB still matches the MAC address listed in the  player info menu.

I initially had some connection troubles using an SB3 with the Zone Alarm firewall.  Unfortunately I can't remember exactly how I fixed the problem (somehow putting the SB3 in the protected zone I would guess) and am travelling so I can't check, but if using a firewall, either XP's or a standalone, you can check by turning it off and trying to connect.  If this is succesfull, at least you'll know where to look for a solution.

This in itself is a big clue.  An address in the 169 range is used when a DHCP enabled device can't find a DHCP address (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_IP_address).

What do you use to assign DHCP address?  If it is your router have you dropped its power and let it reboot?  Could it be partially damaged?  I had a strike that snuck onto the network via a temporarly connected unprotected piece of gear.  It killed a few pieces of gear on the network and one of the partial casualties was a backup wireless router (used as a hub/wireless repeater) that lost 2 of the 4 ethernet ports.  I know it sounds strange, but I could gain/lose network connections just by moving it 1 jack over on the router.

Since you've got three SBs switch them around and see if it follows the hardware, I suspect it won't but either way it helps rule out stuff.  Maybe also you could try changing the ordering of your jacks around?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I ended up connecting the unti to the network via cable and everything worked perfect. Only thing is now I have a really ugly cable running across the floor in the living room!
No problems with the wired connection so I am a little on the confused side now but I do have it working now so I guess I will just forget about it for a while!

Thanks again

OK, so it is definitely something on the wireless side of things ....

* check that the router IP address is entered correctly on the SB.

* check that the SSID (your wireless network passphrase) is correctly entered on the SB (including any blanks).

* if you have setup your router to only let specific MAC addresses connect to it, check that the specified SB MAC address on the router is entered correctly.

If these things are correct, it should connect OK. If it doesn't, check the settings on your other (working) SB's for any differences. If there are none, reset non-connecting SB to defaults and set it up from scratch. It is most unlikely that there is any hardware problem, it will be an incorrect/dropped setting on the router or SB.

Try reseting the hardware...

It sounds as if you need to reset the SB3.

Here are the processes to do hardware resets:

Perform these after disconnecting the power and while powering the SB up.

1. Hold down the brightness key causes a firmware update.

2. Holding ADD while powering on resets to the factory default settings.

3. Holding down the power button -> full hardware reboot

4. press 1 during reset or power on -> re-flash xilinx cpld (io ports)
