Old Marantz CD67SE and Lite DAC-AH

I'd like to set-up a 2nd system in our back "guest" room with my old Marantz CD67SE being the source. Is it worth trying to breathe some new life into this old player with the addition of this $150 Lite DAC AH?

Hi,

Although i have not heard a lite-dac i have heard a couple of these marantz cdp's over the years.  In their stock version they do sound okay but i'm sure with an add on dac you would get some improvement.

It is only $150us and probably worth the try.

Good luck.

The Lite AH is just what the doctor ordered to breathe analog life into an older source component!  Once the Marantz poops out you can replace it with a less expensive cd or dvd player and still have the AH's smooth magic.  Love mine even in it's unmodded form.

Hi,

The marantz CD-67se has a HIGH stock jitter rate (around 650-700picoseconds), and is not a true 16 bit output cd player in its stock form, but rather around a 14 bit unit. So this means you are not extracting a certain amount of detail and resolution (not hearing all the music and missing alot of info), thus feeding into the Lite DAC-AH dont expect any miracles to happen. The best thing to do FIRST is to upgrade the clock in the Marantz CD-67se to a aftermarket low jitter type. Then your experience with the lite dac-ah will be so much more enjoyable since now you are listening to all the music on the disc.

I have owned the cd-67se for many years and know everything and every circuit inside it to the max.

If you have any questions please let me know, just trying to help out.

Thanks!

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your informed response.  I have a pioneer pds-507 with a g&d clock (sure wish tony still made these components) installed and it sounded just as good as my stock perpetual technologies p3a.

Rod

ps i agree with your companies comments regarding the ps audio hca-2 mods as i had mine modified by a friend and it is a stellar performer.  Although with smd components it shouldn't be modified by someone like me.

There's no way I'll spend $200-300 for a clock upgrade on a 10 year old player that I paid $300 for. Thanks for the input though folks, I'll still consider the Lite DAC as a cheap, if only subtle upgrade.

Hi Doug, Question about jitter rate in other digital sources like computers. Many (if not most) modern motherboards have at least optical toslink outputs controlled by onboard audio devices like Realtek.

How much jitter do you suspect one of these toslink devices have for use with an offboard DAC? Or at least, how much loss of detail can you expect compared to using something like a USB device?

I compared an onboard Intel toslink to an M-Audio Delta DIO with a CAL Sigma-Ii 24/94 via a glass optical cable and found little difference allthgouh there was some added sense of air, it was nearly insignificant.
There was also not much of a difference (although more) between that and using a Denon 2900 via an MIT T3 digital coaxial to the same DAC.

I’m shopping a DAC for my PC and have been torn between a cheap’ish DAC like the one mentioned in this thread, a NOS (Scott Nixon style) USB DAC and a used and even quite old DAC that was stellar (Wadia, Meridian and such) 10+ years ago that cost $2500 or more and sell today for around $500.

What’s your thoughts?
