Something with decent midrange, and highs that don't burn the ears, for listening to internet radio.

Many reviews have lots of positive comments until you get the one audiophile who trashes them.  Perhaps the best way is to go to compusa and listen for myself.

You might want to add the Swans M200 to your list.

Some discussion and feedbacks here.

Phil:

How about this:

Sonic Impact T-Amp

and some DIY Full-Range Clones of this:

Pretty sure that combo would give the swans a good run for their money.

While not 'computer' speakers, these  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ALP5/  have been getting good reviews.

It's not fair comparing a $700 speaker to a $175 speaker :). I thought he was looking for a low budget computer speaker.

thanks for the suggestions.  The swans look impressive.  Too bad I didn't get the monsoons years ago...

I am looking for something smaller to go with a flat monitor and less expensive (about $100 max) since most of my bread goes into the big rig.  Not sure there is anything in that price range and size that put outs decent sound.

That's why I said, "DIY" and "CLONE."  :-)

My neighbor bought some Swans a while back... very nice speakers.  I can't believe they sell for so little, the quality of build is exceptional.  Feel very hefty, and sound excellent.  Great relaxed sound, maybe a bit on the thick/warm side rather than being bright and annoying like most.  Only possible caveat is their size/weight.

A friend of mine have a Klipsch Promedia 2.1, I thought they're awesome, I have had many computer speakers price range $40 - $170 in the past but none of them came close to this.

He bought it for only $120 including shipping from Dell. I haven't heard Swan so cannot comment.

Norh 3.0 drums are what I use for this purpose and their sound fits your description.  I have an extra pair I'd be willing to sell for very cheap if you're interested.

My creative computer speaks sound damn good, well the monitors at least in near field.  The sub isn't worth a damn, but then I don't know of a computer system whose sub is.   Still ultimately listenaable.   I *think* the monitor has 3x 1" Aura sound drivers, or so it looks like.

Price and size? Perhaps a pair of pro audio monitors from Alesis, KRK, or M-Audio might work well for you.

I think doublej is right on. Pro monitors are designed for very near-field listening such as sound mixing etc. They offer very accurate sound. Behringer models should be considered for the great value offered.

I’ve used a few pro monitors on my desktop; KRK, M-Audio, JBL, Roland and such. The problem with pro audio speakers is that they are not very musical or colored for enjoyment. They are usually neutral and dry, honest and revealing to the source. The worse the source, the worse the sound.

A friend had a pair of these self powered Videologic Sirocco Spirit speakers which aren’t available  anymore. They are VERY similar to the Swans M200 Multimedia Speakers. The Video Logic’s are low profile and have a VERY musical sound.
