No but I'm not sure how trashing EH tubes did the poster any good either. At least I suggested some tubes that I thought met his criteria. I presumed that was what he was looking for. But obviously you know better.

Several other posters have suggested their favorite 6922's as well (some of which agree with my suggestions) based on their experience with other preamps and somehow they escaped your trash talk. I'm sorry that my suggestions don't meet your personal criteria for a worthwhile post is. Obviousl ...

If you had looked a bit closer, you'd have seen that my trashing of EH tubes was sarcastic.

Hey, I have no clue which 6DJ8/6922/ECC88 "sounds best." There's no way to tell except by trying them all out in the OPs preamp.

Somebody once said, "Tubes have no sound at all, unless you shake them too hard."

This whole tube-rolling thing is a crapshoot. It's like the blind leading the blind.

I never heard anyone say anything good about any Sovteks in any preamp.  Absolutely do not replace them with more of the same garbage.

There are a lot of good choices brought forth in the above posts.  They are all compatible in your preamp.  Find them, buy them, and try them to see what works best in your preamp for your listening preferences.  That's what we all do.
i have an Anthem pre 1L that absolutely sings with a Quad of Amperex 7308 goldpins.i just bought a Balanced Audio Technology VK 3i with factory recomended Sovtecs inside and when i tried rolling in the 7308 gold pins i found that i much prefered the sound of the Sovtecs over the high dollar 7308s in the Vk 3i. go figure ? synergy is an elusive thing and results vary greatly from preamp to preamp. Sovtecs kick ass in the VK 3i. thanks....WCW III

Which supports my statement that you can't recommend tubes for some else unless you have the same system they do. :)

Yes, scribble.  You're right.  You're always right.  I can tell because you're always the last one to "keep up the fight".

Good gravy.

I would really suggest trying some of the cheapest of the cheap before blowing money on the big-bucks tubes.  Nothing irks me more than trying out a beautiful-looking fancy-pants tube and finding that it's too noisy to use.  I have quite a few "PQ" / "SQ" / gold-pin / Bugle Boy beauties that are useless due to noise.

Try to get ahold of some Russian rocket-logo 6N23P tubes from ebay and give 'em a whirl (sound good in my preamp but they can be noisier -- selected ones are available through Upscale Audio, but for much more $$$).  JJ's are well-regarded.  Ei's 6DJ8 has somewhat lower gain than most 6DJ8s, but is liked by many.  Differences between tubes can be shocking, but  discovering a $5 tube that you can be 99% happy with is very satisfying.

Which 6922 should a newbie buy?  Buy the most expensive freakin' set of 6922's out there and get it out of your system.   :D  You'll have a great time for a year or two.  Then realize how much money you've dropped on tubes and go for current production JJs or Ei Gold Elites.  Once you get over the dissapointment of not spending a lot of money on tubes, you'll realize that the Ei's sound as good as the Amperex PQ White Label pinched wasted gold plated cryogenically frozen dipped in Monica's snatch tubes that you paid $100 each for.   :deadhorse:  :banghead:  :slap:

That's what I did.
