Large speakers in a small room
« on: 19 Mar 2006, 07:39 pm »
It seems like the wisdom is that large speakers in a small room is not recommended. My experience seems to validate this view,
but why is that so?
I know about the explanation that a large speaker tends to load up the room, and that seems to be true even at low volume, but what does that mean exactly?.
Is there some kind of formula or rule of thumb that could be helpful in estimating a threshold for ideal size?

Conversely, is there a formula to determine how much speaker is needed for a large room?

Does the effective surface area of the drivers play a role?

Large speakers can work great in smaller rooms!  Of course good results require a means of controlling bass, for which DSP room correction is ideal.  I love the bass support of my large, digitally corrected woofer system -- it provides the ambience, weight and heft that to me is a prerequisite for convincing reproduction of music in the home.
