I'm a recent AVA buyer (Ultra EC), and was trying to reach Frank today. He had to go back to the hospital for some further treatment, but will be returning today or tomorrow. He is apparently doing fine, but in case you are trying to reach him, I thought I would pass this information along.

I was afraid something like that was going on - he didn't respond to my emails this week.

Hip replacement scheduled for March 29, but I know Frank had some continuing problems with his other leg, so this may be related.

When he has his hip replaced, he will be out of action for several weeks too. Surgery is fairly major, and the treatments afterwards well, they are a pain in the butt.

I'M BACK  !!!

Just an overnight stay to pump up one of the vein/artery grafts in my left leg, no big deal, except that the surgeon for my case had a huge schedule the day after the proceedure so I had to sit in the hospital for a full extra day twiddling my thumbs with nothing better on TV than Jerry Springer, etc.

Answering mail again today.  As far as the hip transplant goes, I am preparing for that with an upstairs computer and printer and tie to high speed web access, so I will be able to work even while I can't make stairs.  The hospital stay for the hip is supposed to be only 3-4 days, no big deal.

It's the therapy after the replacement that is time consuming that concerns me. Yep, I can see it now, here Frank is in a hospital bed, with a gurney with a soldering iron some papers with circuit drawings, and some perf board with components stuck on it for wiring. "now Frank," the nurse says, "put down that iron. you have to go to your pool therapy now." "I just have to solder this resistor and this harness of wires, and I'm done.""Frank, you have to get up and walk. It's the best thing for you."

Time for a MacBook Pro, Frank!
Digital out.
In case you want to play with iTunes going to the UltraDAC. You won't have to get up for weeks!

My father had a hip replacement a few years ago at age 67. He's a happy camper again.

The least expensive iBook ($999) is also a very usable machine. If the Apple Store had any of these as refurbs, it would be an even better bet.

I am getting that little iBook, no refurbs available.

Larry will help me get it conneced via airport to my main computer downstairs and onto the net so I won't need to use stairs for a week or so.

Frank:  If you havent already, please check into a new procedure called MIS...Minimally invasive surgery...for hip replacement.  Its being spearheaded by the company I work for, and it so happens that you will be able to see some information about it on ABC this evening at 10:00 pm eastern on the Miracle Workers show.  It should make recovery much less traumatic, and save you a lot of blood, time, and pain too!  The downside is that you wont be given as much morphine
Good Luck.

HI Frank,
I wish you the very best of luck and a speedy recovery.

As far as the laptop goes, do yourself a favor and go wireless internet. This way you can use the laptop anywhere in the house and not worry about connection. You can also take it just about anywhere else these days as it will pick up any wireless motem in the area. Around here, I am able to be on line anywhere I go.
My wife says I cannot bring it to the park anymore as I tend to ignore her when answering emails.

 Be well.

Frank:

If you do go wireless using a cable modem or DSL, be sure that you encrypt your wireless network. Otherwise, others will be able to use your network easily, and after enough freeloaders are on, it'll just slow down your connection. I'll be happy to talk to you about this if you're interested.

Your iBook has wireless built in, Frank... All you need is a wireless router. You'll like it. I certainly enjoy mine. It's a very involved process to set up- takes 30 seconds or more. Heal quickly! Somebody might need help moving a 120 lb tube amp...

That's right but also the reason we can use our laptops anywhere we go. Let's not tell everyone this :nono:

There are also a lot of public places that have wireless networks available. Most public libraries make it available.

I have no doubt that someday there will be satelites making this available to everyone on the planet. Or at least towers covering certain geographical regions.

Slowing your connection down is a minor problem compared to the huge security hole that is unsecured wireless. Even so-called secured wireless isn't very secure, unless you're doing IPsec or VPN over wireless. (It's better than nothing though, and will keep out your nosy neighbor and his pimply-faced 13 year old.) :)
