Welcome to Audiocircle!

Yes, if the Clari-T has a volume control, you can still use preamp in front of it.  You would need to max out the Clari-T volume and use the volume control of the preamp.  If the preamp has too much gain, you can cut back on the Clari-T's volume control.  

Even better than a volome potentiometer for this application is a stepped attenuator (I mention DACT parts here, which are top quality:
