V for Vendetta

So far this movie has two things going for it imo....its going to be playing at Imax, and was made by the makers of The Matrix.

Anyone else going to see this one?

Two rentals I will be checking out this week if time permits is The History of Violence, and Good Night and Good Luck.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Good Night...

I saw the movie at an indie theater, and to say the least, I was disappointed. It was so heavily hyped as an amazing film, a necessary piece of American cinema...etc. etc.

Now, I am far too young to have lived through any of the events. However, I came into the film with a good understanding of the social climate at the time, important players in the scenario, etc.

Basically, I didn't feel like anything happened in the film. Perhaps subtleties were lost on me, but it just felt like it assumed it was so important and so good that only a fool would dare notice that there is essentially no build up, no climax, and no background information to flesh out the events. A definite let down. The B/W looked fantastic on the big screen though. (Why do we say B/W though, when clearly it's shades of grey? always bugged me)

I watched History of Violence....and would reccomend it as a rental.
I would give it 3.75 out of 5 rating.

As far as Goodnight....I tried watching it afterwards and fell asleep about half way through...so I will have to reserve my opinion on that one for now.

I also watched History of Violence last night. Would agree with your assessment. Not sure it was as good as advertised though. Full-frontal nudity certainly helped.

I was almost shocked to see William Hurt play a mobster

as I tried to know as little as possible about the movie before watching it.

I'm going to be seeing it at least twice this weekend. Had planned on seeing it in IMAX, but the IMAX in Seattle isn't getting it.

I wasn't very thrilled when I went through a bit of hassle to go downtown, find parking, walk all the way to the theater (since there's never any parking anywhere near the theater) stand in line to buy tickets and be told that no, it won't be playing there...

That blows bubba....I hope its not for poltical reasons, and they don't end up not having it here.
It was previewed last week when I saw that deep sea documentery in 3-d though.
And they did have V, as well as Superman posters up for the I-max.

Seattle seems like it would be more than big enough to support this movie at I-max....whatever there reasoning.

I think the problem is the Boeing IMAX (where all of the DMR IMAX releases are shown in Seattle) is located in the Seattle Pacific Science Center. Which is basically a hands on type of science exhibit/museum for grade school kids.

They also yanked Batman out after less than 3 weeks to put Charlie & the Chocolate factory in for 3 months!

Man I was pissed at that because I kept trying to see it with various people and it was pretty much sold out all of the time. Then it turned out that Charlie sucked big time (IMO that is) and I was even less thrilled that they yanked Batman for that horrid film.

LOL....I would think Depps Charlie was at least as disturbing to any child as Batman could be.
Depps rendering was bordering on insane/creepy imo

Basically the media took on Mcarthy and his witch hunt and more or less won....I guess that about sums it up.
I would give this movie a 3.5 for good acting...but would never buy such a movie, and only reccomend it to those interested in this subject.

Basically when this all took place (before my time also) this would have been a big deal for the media (in this case television) to go against its sponsers best interest with this particular story, as well as taking on a highly visible political voice of the times.

So the movie portrays the beggining and the end of that particular aspect of the media I guess.

I could see some younger people being bored to death watching this movie...and there is no way my kids would sit through it

V for Vendetta is a great movie. It is based on an 80's comic book and is definitely a thinking man's movie. JakeBob says check it out.

Mix 1/4 part 1984 with 1/4 part Darkman with 1/8 part Equalibrium then stir while adding 1/8 part Phantom of the Opera. Top with a Cherry...oops I mean Natalie Portman

There you have it! Vendetta in a nutshell!....Well, sort of...Anyway, there quite a few core elements from all the movies I've listed above within this movie.

BTW: I really liked this movie. It is a thinking persons movie. (All Ridilin users please avoid as you just won't "get it").

Saw it tonight at I-max as they only play it twice a day and it was sold out last weekend.
Very nice break from the norm....with no where near the action that trailors suggest.
Lots of great dialouge and good acting though.

I give it 4 out of 5.

I just got back from V for Vendetta and thought it was excellent. I especially loved the Benny Hill parody in it. Anyway, I've never read Alan Moore's graphic novel, but I'm going to pick it up now. Extremely thought provoking film.

I missed it in the theater but bought it on DVD on NRT. Just got my new PJ set up and finally got the chance to watch V For Vendetta. I thought it was really superb; well written and acted. Portman is really a great actress (and this was a better vehicle to display it than Star Wars

). I really loved the decision to never show V's face, too.

I'm obviously in the minority with "V". I thought it was... okay. I guess I'm not a fan of "Big Brother" type of movies. Seeing the guy in the mask the entire time 'wore' on me - it's as if he had no emotion and you couldn't (obviously) read his facial expressions. All of his 'voice-overs' felt just like that to me - voice overs. Portman was great - this movie allowed her to show her chops a little more than some of her recent movies (HIGHLY recommend "The Professional" and "Beautiful Girls" if you haven't seen them).

"Darkman" was a good comparison (I thought the same thing while watching "V"), but I thought Darkman was much better.

Good Night and Good Luck. Granted, it was no action film, but I thought it captured the time period perfectly (I'm not that old so I wasn't there). I never really knew much about Edward R. Murrow, but to know the story behind one of the first real television news shows was fascinating to me. It seemed more of a character study of the people involved and explored the decisions and responsibilities they felt they had.

Have you seen Darkman recently? I thought it was okay when it came out, but it hasn't aged well. I tried to watch it not long ago and spent a half hour howling with laughter. In retrospect I think it was a pretty cheesy flick.

No, actually I haven't seen Darkman since it first came out. I might have the same opinion as yours if I saw it again (that was a long time ago). I'm sure "V" is a much 'slicker' movie with a higher budget and definitely more star power (Liam Neeson was relatively unknown when Darkman came out).

Don't get me wrong, I didn't think Vendetta was a bad movie, maybe just not my cup of tea. Parts of it I really liked, parts of it I really didn't. Like I said, I realize I'm in the minority here.

I know I am lagging behind on my movie viewing (not having the HT for 6+ months will do that), but I finally watched V for Vendetta last night. I thought it was well written, snappy, and moved along at a good pace. It didn't try and pretend it was something it isn't and I found it entertaining.

I especially liked the acting by Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. I thought both portrayed their characters in such a way that it was easy to understand them and you wanted to care about what happened to them. Both actors weren't overshadowed by the special effects and really showed a good range of skills. I also liked the fact that the story was tight and didn't deviate down any rat holes.

Two thumbs up.
