Modded SB3 progress report

My RWA modded SB3 is now passing through the 250 hour mark. Is there some known/predicted break-in benefits that I should be expecting at around the 250 hour mark? I sure seem to be noticing some startling changes.

It's hard to qualify/quantify of course. But there are times where I am jolted out of my reverie, especially on jazz, blues, pop, small ensemble stuff. I remember hearing a vinyl Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) at an audio salon some years back that my own little system last night on Clapton Unplugged was very reminiscent of.

As for the classical stuff, what surprises me the most is how string basses now sound like string basses. No more mud. I can almost smell the rosin flying of their bows. A real distinct growling, rattling, buzzing sound. Fabulous. Note: there is more to bass than achieving extreme low frequencies and slam.

As for PC-Audio via the SB3, one of my favorite things to do after 2-3 hours of serious listening is to hop thru my pop stuff and select one track from a bunch of albums one at a time (i.e. no playlist) - just picking stuff out basically at random. Great fun.

BTW, I am saving up for the RWA 30Watter. (Signature Amp). I expect it will handle my RM40s in a way that the Clari-T can't.

Instead of starting another thread, I hope you don't mind if I may chime in my progress.

My RWA analog modded SB3 is also passing through the 200 hours mark and the sound is more open up and come to life. Right now, I have about 80GB of FLAC music stored on an external USB HD enclosure. The nice thing about storing music on an external USB enclosure is that I can hook it to  my  laptop while surfing the net  and listen to music at the same time. Another word, I don't have to power up the main desktop in the other room (energy saving$$$) :). Everything including your whole music library, reading email, browsing thru  AC forum, checking your stock portfolio is controlled right under my fingertip and on the laptop. That is a cool feature if I may say so.

So far, I haven't done any critical A/B comparison between my Denon 2900 and Rega Planet but I have the feeling that these two players will be sent to a new home very soon.

My system: RWA SB3 -> Blue Circle BC3 preamp -> Odyssey Extreme Mono -> Onix Reference 1 with a lot of cheap foam as acoustic treatment :)

Hi Guys,

Glad you are enjoying your RWA modded SB3s and for sharing your experience with them as they fully burn in.

I always appreciate the feedback and it feels really good to hear that you guys are finding the modded SB3 to be a good value (something that can compete with transports, dedicated units, or separate dacs costing a lot more hard earned cash).   This is what it is all about.

Thanks again for sharing, and happy listening!  :D

Best regards,
