Don't know if any of you were aware of this West African musician, but he did  some nice stuff in times past that I've enjoyed.
"Talking Timbuktu" with Ry Cooder won a Grammy in 1994, and apparently he won another last year.  I'll have to go looking for that.
He passed yesterday, and was the real deal with some great world music.
He also has worked with Taj Mahal in the past.

Lovely stuff if you have taste for good rythms.

Here's a link to the NY Times article, if you can get to it:

Thanks for the tunes, Ali!

Sorry to hear this. By strange coincidence I was listening to Talking Timbuktu just yesterday. Must have been something in the ether that made me queue it up.

I read about his demise on bbc news yesterday. Talking timbuktu is probably one of the most played CD in my collection ... almost as much as my dire straits albums. I recently bought his latest grammy winning CD - In the heart of the Moon. Simply awesome stuff!

I remember the first time i heard his music ... it was while watching "The spanish apartment", a french movie. I was enthralled by "Ai Du" ... and simply had to buy the album. An amazing musician. A true blues master. He will be missed.
RIP.

"Talking Timbuktu" with Ry Cooder  - great record , but strangely I don't have anything else by him . I liken him to the late , great John Lee Hooker .
