A couple of years ago I discovered "goth country" and became an instant fan. Dreamend, 16 Horsepower, and Wovenhand use banjo that can be dark and scary. It's a unique subgenre of alternative country and Americana. At the time it was a very deep rabbit hole for me. 
Lol, currently stuck in said rabbit hole but enjoying it thoroughly.
