Elliott Brood -
Days Into Years 2011
Two years on this album still strikes me as one fine piece of work from what critics dubbed Canada's purveyors of "death country". I think this has more in common with the golden era of Neil Young, more
Powderfinger than
Peace In The Valley. Country, folk, grungy
Rust Never Sleeps guitar sounds and a blend of gentle lilt and insistent drive all ladled over some
really solid songwriting. Dark ? Hell yeah, this
is an Elliot Brood album and these guys write about some pretty funky themes. The central conceit of this record is the horrific experience of leaving the idyllic Canadian life to be flung into the human-meat grinder that was World War I trench warfare; their previous album was built around the story of the Donner Party.
Consistent and compelling front to back. You could find many worse ways to spend 40 minutes than giving
Days Into Years a spin.
