D'Angelo - Live In Oslo 2012
...or Stockholm...or Helsinki or somewhere. These cities all look the same two weeks into a tour.
Actually, people who know their D'Angelo like Neekomax will know this was from a Stockholm show. They will also know this is a smokin' hot set by an exceptional talent who is to this era what Prince was to his and Sly Stone was to his before that - a summary of all that came before him in his genre distilled down into something potent but highly potable. And like Prince and Sly, he takes his influences and uses them as fuel to launch the genre into a whole new direction.
Get to know D'Angelo...
Thanks for the heads-up on this one, Neeko !
D.D.
My great pleasure! He made a recent surprise appearance at a venue in Brooklyn as a duo with him on keys and Questlove on drums, natch. Quest ASSURED the audience that the new album is 'almost finished', and D reluctantly confirmed. The expectations are just ridiculous at this point, 13 years later(!). Sometimes addiction really pisses me off, especially when it deprives us of greatness.
Anyway, right now I am consuming...
Les Negresses Vertes - Acoustic Clubbing (2001)A very cool album that is notable for its unique sound. Acoustic clubbing refers to electronic music grooves played entirely on acoustic instruments. There are vocals on nearly all the tracks, and advanced francophones will note their trademark surreal lyrics, a bit a la Steely Dan in that sense (although not musically, which may or may not be reassuring to the uninitiated). They play a bunch of older NV songs, and there's a few new ones, too. The opening track. "C'est pas la mer a boire" is particularly compelling.
