Bleed Like Me - Garbage

Samples

Last album in the garbage-a-thon. Not all that bad.

I think that's the only one I don't have. I was deployed a lot that year and must have missed it.

The Beach Boys -  Pet Sounds        1966 ( 2012 SACD re-issue )

I've never considered myself a Beach Boys fan. I think I bought this album almost of a sense of duty, feeling as though I really needed to hear it because of it's place in the rock canon, this despite the fact that I've avoided their music like the plague all of my life. I've heard it a few times now and I have to say that it is one of the strangest records I own. The weird-to-creepiness innocent fantasy world that the lyrics spring from, the wildly lush (over-)production and arrangements utilizing what seems to be every instrument known to man and everything from a freight train to barking dogs, the sheer brazenly symphonic sound of the thing...what a technical achievement Pet Sounds must have been for it's time. The SACD version just highlights all the oddities laid out here. It's really something, this. I'm just still not sure what. Strangely compelling...

The John Butler Trio -  Grand National     2007

The more people in North America hear and see Australia's John Butler Trio, the closer Dave Matthews is to driving a cab.
Please...won't you help?

The Tragically Hip - Day For Night        1994

Nautical Disaster
Songwriters: Baker, Robert; Downie, Gord; Fay, John; Langlois, Paul; Sinclair, Gordon;

I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day.
It was as though I'd been spit there, settled in ,
Into the pocket of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear.

One afternoon, four thousand men died in the water here,
And five hundred more were thrashing madly as parasites might in your blood.
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only,
Anything that systematic would get you hated.
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated ( to die ).
The selection was quick, the crew was picked and
Those left in the water got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home.

Then the dream ends when the phone rings.
You doing alright he said it's out there most days and nights,
But only a fool would complain.
Anyway Susan, if you like, our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory,
As those fingernails scratching on my hull.
