Hey Dave - You're playing in my ball park with Haley Bonar and Orenda Fink!  :D

I think they're both incredibly talented, but that Haley Bonar disc is my favorite of the two. I just love her sound. I bought an album the other day by a band called Art in Manila. I'd never heard of them before and bought it based on a quick walkman sampling. I opened it up last night to put it in a new case and saw that Orenda Fink is one of the band members. Crazy!

AllMusic.com:

"A very strong effort, this 1995 Elektra release deserves its own place
among the list of important '90s aggro/punk/hardcore releases."

I agree that they are both very talented.  I also like Haley better of the two because of her song writing.  Her Big Star has some songs which are more up tempo than the album you played.  One of the tracks is Dylan-like.  Haley's latest album, Golder is also very good.  She signed both albums when I saw her last summer at the Mercury Lounge.  Orenda is a multi-instrumentalist.  She was one half of Azure Ray (Saddle Creek records) with Maria Taylor being the other half.  They met in High School in Alabama.  I like most of the Saddle Creek bands, and Rilo Kiley is my all-time favorite band.  Orenda joined Rilo Kiley on their final tour in 2010, which I got to see twice.  I have Art In Manila's Set the Woods on Fire.  Is that what you bought?

I absolutely love this band. This is one of their few recordings that I don't have. You just got me motivated to add it to my "to get" list.   :thumb:

"Recorded on Cassette" says all you need to know about the sound quality of the recording. The music was fine if you can get past that.

Well, I plan to get all of Haley's albums, and soon. She's my favorite discovery so far this year  :thumb:

Azure Ray somehow slipped under my radar. I didn't know much about them until I saw Orenda was half the band after reading her bio on Wiki. Yes, very talented.

Set the Woods on Fire is the one I bought. In a clearance bin of all places. I plan on listening to it when I get back in a couple of hours.

And I still need to get those Rilo Kiley albums off my wish list and into my library  :duh:

I think that might be her best. Her voice on a couple of those songs is incredibly emotional.

SlushPuppy,
Sorry to respond so late.  The Magnetic Fields are a "Fun" group, and I love their acerbic lyrics.
I with they would tour Salt Lake City.
Right now, listening to new stuff:
Todd Snider "Agnostic Hymns", though he just released a tribute album to Jerrry Jeff Walker this week.

And Nora Jones new one, Little Broken Hearts

Have to listen to this more, but the jury's still out.  That cover.  Is this supposed to be her new "edgy" look, like when Linda Ronstadt was leaving the comfort of L.A. "Eagles Land" and stretched out to punk? :duh:

Did you know Kim Deal was the lead singer of this band AND wrote all the songs?
Neither did I until I went looking for samples
