Chicago - Chicago At Carnegie Hall    1971 ( 2005 expanded Rhino reissue )

Before the suck set in and became terminal, these guys were quite a band. For fans, the long out-of-print Live In Japan '72 is being re-released by WEA Japan in SHM-CD format next month.

Thanks.  Used CDs at the music stores typically go for at least $5 or more.  I've bought about three hundred used CDs for $1 or $2 (sometimes cheaper) at various good will stores in the past two years.  I like and kept about 75 of them, and the rest I donated back to good will and got tax credit.  It's a win-win situation.  Found some real gems this way.

I'm a big early Chicago fan. For some reason I only have a poorly mastered greatest hits collection of their music. I guess I should fix that one of these days.

I'm thinking that SHM-CD of Live In Japan would be a pretty good place to start - pretty reasonably priced as those things go, too. I broke down and pre-ordered it tonight - always wanted it. The Rhino re-issues are all really decent-sounding ( even At Carnegie Hall - the horns don't sound like kazoos any more  ) if you're looking to build your collection, Pup.

And get some more Pearl Jam...

Rhino does a good job when they want to. They did all of Todd Rundgrens albums when his catalog made it to CD, and I think they sound pretty good. They also did the Smiths "Complete" box set last year which sounds fantastic. Thanks for the head's up on the Carnegie Hall SHM  :thumb:

+1 on the Rhino thing - They do a good job when they want to. The re-issue of the early Chicago catalogue was an example of what they can do. They did a nice job on the Elvis Costello back catalogue in places, less so in others. It may also be an issue sometimes of what they have to work with in terms of masters, etc. I know that was an issue with them re-doing the second Chicago album.
Live In Japan '72 was always more highly-regarded than Live At Carnegie Hall  from a SQ point of view - band members were various shades of livid about how that album sounded. James Pankow was the guy who originally drew the comparison between how the horns sounded on that recording vs. kazoos. I've always wanted a copy of the Live In Japan '72 album but it was hard to get and ridiculously over-priced. Getting it new for a fraction of what used copies were going for is OK by me. Getting it for that price in SHM-CD sweetens the deal. Being able to hear them sing Questions 67 & 68 in Japanese - priceless... :green:

Just "inherited" about 60 LPs from a radio station, and have been working through the stuff.  In the mix was "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" by The Incredible String Band, a band I vaguely remember.  Since I like old British folk music (Steeleye Span, etc.) I gave it a spin.

Think Bob Dylan, Mommas And Papas, early psychedelic Jefferson Airplane, all drunk as shit, out of tune, no rehearsal and lousy sonics...............

Were THEY that stoned?  Were WE that stoned to think that was good music back then?   :duh:  :slap: :banghead: :wtf:

I guess $43 isn't too bad. Looks like a release date of May 23rd. OK, I'm in. Thanks again!
