Boy am I excited! Finally an RM40 w/ POWERED BASS System

Now Available: The RM40 P (Powered)

Man, I have been petitioning for this, ever since B, decided that he liked a woofer amp.

Testing has finally been completed and adjustments have been made to allow one of my "DREAM Speakers" to now exist.

It is the RM40 with a 1000w per speaker, powered BASS system.

This means the two 10" MegaWoofers (Low Woofer and MidWoofer) can now be ordered with 1000w of power.

What does this mean?

It means now all those who want to power the Neopanels and Tweeters with tubes, or other more "delicate" SS amps, can use the speakers and not sacrifice any "SLAM FACTOR"

No, in fact, they will have more slam than most any single solidstate amp!

B, has made the adjustments to the x-over to allow this System to provide the BIGGEST and BEST (and BADDEST

) Bass you could imagine.

I wouldn't doubt but what it will also add to LF extension overall, which is now around 24Hz in the stock model.

So as of this moment the RM40 can be ordered as "POWERED", and this option will be offered at only $499 per speaker, which includes the amp, installation, and any and all electronic and x-over adjustments.

While I have always felt the RM40 in a league of its own, this places it at an even higher level.

This is "Brand New", so all VMPS dealers or agents, feel free to contact B, or me for details.

John Casler,

As you probably know I ordered a pair of RM40s through Scott Mayo on Feb. 27. Would it be possible to upgrade my pair to the powered pair? I know this may not be possible and if so I can completely understand.

Can you please describe the location of the amp (i.e. is it built into the speaker or separate)?

I will not be getting the upgrade although it seems like an interesting idea. If I feel the need I will biamp using the built-in crossovers in the future. Thanks for the discussion.

Just so no one thinks John is talking to himself, I will mention that he and I had a phone conversation. between his two posts

But also to answer his question since it might be relevant to others. The amp will be installed in the rear of the cabinet.

After hearing the amps power on the subwoofers, I have to say the "Iron Grip" it has on a pair of woofers will transform the bass of the RM40 from excellent to incredible.

Also the Passive Radiators will be "pre-pinched" and burned in at the factory, and not need to be touched. (unless your the "tweaky" type like me)

While I haven't cleared it with B, I would think we can also offer this "option" on the RM2.

Yes, that is the one.

I should mention also that the actual wattage will depend on the "impedance" of the Woofer System only, which may not be 4 ohms.

So actual power will be somewhere between 500 and 1000w.

It also has a single band equalizer which could offer a nice touch if you have a nasty room mode.

So what is the sensitivity of the ribbon section? I think the FST is 96dB, the neos are probably, what 92dB? With a Spelz autoformer to balance out the impedance, this may be an ideal SET candidate.

Mid section is 92dB, trebles 96dB, but I find myself setting mid levels above 1dB below the treble.

Not to upset the apple cart, but I'd bet you'd also get excellent results employing the smaller brother PE amp rated 1/2 the larger. All other features identical. With seperate amps driving each channel bass system you still gots mega low frequency excitation/action.

My old system with RM40s employed Marantz 150W monoblocks on each bass system & my 25W dual EL34's on the ribbon array. It rocked. Could only be better with more power, active XO & parametric EQ for the worst room mode. Wow! I gotta hear that at Brian's soon. I'll bring over my ModWright preamp for him to audition.

I better not like the RM40PB (Powered Bass) more than my 30s cause I prefer the smaller stature of the 40's wittle brudder.

I think we'll call it the PBS Powered Bass System since it is not truly (P) powering the whole speaker as a P designation would indicate.

So RM40 w/PBS it is.

And Brian, can correct me is I am wrong, but I think those with RM2 models who are handy with a soldering iron and saw, could add this option to their speakers at $399 for the amp alone.
