Just ordered new speakers

I just ordered a pair of Focal component speakers over ebay.  They are the PolyKevlar series model 165K2 and they feature a 6.5" mid/woofer and a 1 3/8" tweeter with a separate crossover.  For those not familiar with Focal, they are the car audio branch of JM Lab.  They actually manufacture a Utopia line of car audio drivers but they are a bit more than I wanted to spend.

I have also purchased a 3 channel Alpine amp that I will use to run the Focals and a single 10 inch subwoofer in a sealed box.  I'm excited to see how this turns out!

hello,

i've heard the focal car audio speakers and you should be really happy with them.  they are much better than your run of the mill car audio speakers, although a bit more expensive i think.

my home audio speakers use 2 focal mid/bass drivers per speakers and produce awesome bass.

anyway happy listening.

Focals are definately a good choice.  Too bad they're a bit out of my price range.

In my car, I'm currently using all Eclipse component + 8812DVC sub.  It serves me well and it's really fun to listen to.

Be sure to dampen the areas where you choose to mount your speakers.  The surrounding areas of most cars are of plastic or vinyl, and this causes a junk of resonance.

I'm actually having Tweeter install the speakers in my doors for me.  I'd do it myself but it's cold and I don't have a garage.  I wanted them to put dynamat in the door panels but they are really booked up right now and would have to keep my car for like 3 days.  I figure thats something I can do myself over the summer.

I am now trying to pick out a sub.  I think I am going to go with an Image Dynamics IDQ 10.  This is supposed to be a great sounding sub and it only needs a .5 cu ft enclosure.

Try the Eclipse 8810 DVC Titanium.   Of all the brands I've heard, this comes out to be the most musical one.  If you give it around 500 watts of power, you will have a lot of headroom and your bass will be much tighter.  www.eclipse-web.com

I actually got an Infinity Perfect 10 for $140 online so I am going to give that a shot.  I have ordered a box from a guy who uses 3/4" mdf and lots of bracing so it should be pretty good.  If the Infinity doesn't work maybe I'll look at the Eclipse but those Titanium ones are $$$.

I received my Focal components last week and they look very nice.  They are huge for car speakers, I hope they fit in my doors.

You should consider this website:
www.fatmat.com
They carry excellent damping materials at far better cost than dynamat.javascript:emoticon('')

Hey, Zoodog,

I finally decided on my speakers, and I bought CDT HD62-ef (euro frame high definition series).  I think these will be excellent for a smooth sound, not the typical brightness of car audio speakers.  They are on the way and should be in my hot little hands soon.

I remember seeing somewhere that you couldn't install the Focals because they were too deep?  I have been reading up on this, and while I'm no expert, there are a few in the car audio world that make spacers from MDF to pull the driver out of the door a bit and allow the window to roll down.  This works if you have enough space between your door speaker grill and the mounting area.  I might have to do this with my CDTs when they arrive (they are 2 3/4" deep).

You might try this with your Focals.

Did you pick up something else to use instead of the Focals?
