I'm sure someone will reply with a more informed and more informative posting :) but in short, it's "regular" CDs. No XRCD, no HDCD, nothing fancy like SACD, just the vanilla CD format standard.

I thought it was the little red book that Chairman Mao handed out!    I got one somewhere -- it has some interesting expressions from the translation.

Wow, given the fact that some people seem to always distinguish when they are talking about Redbook CDs, I'm disappointed that there's not anything more to it, lol. Are the majority of CD releases Redbook?? If I'm shopping on Amazon, is there some way I can know ahead of time if a particular recording is in accordance with the Redbook guidelines?

aj...yes, essentially if its a music CD, you can pretty much assume it's redbook unless otherwise specified (eg. SACD, DVD-A).  Even HDCD is redbook (plus some additional data for use with an HDCD-enabled CD player)...

C'mon...Kelly Ripa on the cover of Redbook, telling you "Get the love you want" isn't good enough?

This thread had me in stitches...I also have a blind-spot on another often used term, squeezebox, but I think it has to do with computer audio but you never know...lol.
I love the Redbook magazine analogy.

"Squeezebox" is the name of a specific product from SlimDevices (http://www.slimdevices.com) that is used to play music stored on your computer on your audio system.

Is it possible to pull music off the computer that will sound good on a 'real' system? Or is it only going to sound good over computer speakers and headphones?

The SB3 version of the squeezebox (the latest), had me sell off $1000 worth of front end, and preamp, if that gives you the idea...

Mark: Can you give me a basic description of what you mean? I'm putting together a pretty nice system, but when it comes to interfacing a PC I am clueless  :?

Read all about it at their site, and then decide if stock is good enough, or have one of the two companies here on AC mod it for you.....

I've got one that I use just as a transport into my DAC into my real system...and while it is not of "reference" quality, it sounds quite good.  Have only tried using it as a standalone player in my system once, and I'd say it didn't embarrass itself.  Note that the Squeezebox is the lowest-priced component in my system, including my cables...

Are you guys just uploading your CDs to a hard drive, or are you actually pulling music off the web? Like Itunes or something?  When I get a new computer in a few months, that's what I really want to investigate. I keep hearing that there are compression issues with online music that prevents it from being enjoyable on a real 2-channel rig.....but I know very little about Ipods, or MP3 players, or Napster, or any of that stuff.....but what really interests me is the idea of downloading music off the web and having some way to interface it with my HT/stereo. Is this where the Squeezebox thing comes into play? Or is that entirely different?
