Construction question on GK1
« on: 19 Feb 2006, 04:45 pm »
Hi,

I have made a mistake in drilling the lid holes on my case for the GK-1.
I made them too far apart. (1cm more)

Solution :

- Make a new lid (lots of work...time and money spending :( )

- Divide the PCB in 2, cutting it in half. CAN THIS BE DONE ?

From the desing point of view, i dont see any constraints as it seems totaly mirrored...

Thank you for helping
Filipe

Ah, Felipe,

Trap for young players!!  It is very difficult to get the tube spacing exactly correct;  too many holes.

Yes, you can cut the pcb in half.  It is configured so that this is possible for unusual layouts.  No problem at all!!

Cheers,

Hugh

Thank you Hugh ... this will save me time and money.
A rather odd look inside the box, but in the outside all remains the same.

I am planning on "rock it on" tomorrow.... 8)

Hi Felipe,

You could just increase the diameter of each hole by 5mm. You would have to use a file and only take metal from the sides of the holes that face each other.

If the extra 2.5mm around the tube worries you could dress the edge with something that is heat resistant. Off hand I can't think of anything, except wood or lead. They do make fancy tube rings that may hide the error.

Hi Felipe,
If i were you and want to have the PCboard intact , I will use another plate on top of the panel and drill the correct spacing.

It could be, if you have resources, alum plate anodized, even gold plated.

1 cm is quite big, I have similar problem on my current TLP but it was only a few mm off, by having slightly bigger holes can fixed the problem.

I hope that help.

cheers

Nice woodwork Filipe, should be more of it!

Cutting the board is dead easy. I found a fine tooth hacksaw blade did the job well [although I did it before soldering on the components].

I did the cutting for a slightly different reason in that I want to arrange spacing for knobs and their shafts along with a different approach to displaying the tubes.

Yeah, I know, there are just too many nice things that Chung has on his website, those pure silver RCA's sure look good to me, as does the silver wire and, and......

Interestingly I was speaking to Keith Eichmann recently about RCA sockets and my thoughts were that surely these should be high quality if you were going to spend big bucks on interconnects as they are an intergral part of the chain, Keith told me that he  uses some from Jaycar.  I can't understand the logic here but his system (using his cabling of course) is the best I have heard to date.

PS I have bought quite a few bits and pieces from vt4c and have found Chung to be a gentleman of high integrity and highly recommended.  8)

Jeezz....Bluesky....you got me into trouble  :nono:

I just CANNOT live without having one of those tube covering rings !!
Do you know what is funny, i 1st saw those metalic rings on a Shangling tube CD player (or was it an Shangling amp ?)  and FELL IN LOVE.

I was already making plans to BUILD the rings myself...but for 4,5$ ???? PLEASSSSEEE.....i am placing an order "tout de suite".

But when i checked out the rest of the website, man, he has some serious good looking sh**** there !!
I'll have to look into it....seriously THANKS A LOT !

PS. Do the gold plated tube socket make any difference to the ones supplied by Hugh in the GK1 ?

Spooky.. I saw the same thing in some HI FI mag some time ago and loved it. I'm pretty sure it was a CD player. That was one nice looking baby, for sure..

Hi Guys

Er............I suppose I should interpret this as thanks!

vt4c will be happy at least, Chung travels throughout China and only selects quality stuff, he told me there is a lot of pretty crappy products he has to wade through before finding stufff he would use himself (and sell).

Hey Ian
Nice to see you quoting me, but, I am not aware of any RCA's that I use, come from Jaycar :?: Perhaps, if I use Jaycar RCA's my system will sound even better. What do you think :P

thanks again
