Speaker recommendation $500-$675 range

Hello...i am looking for recommedations on used speakers in the $500 - $675 price range that would match well with my Onix Melody SP3 tube amp (38 wpc).  They would be located in a 17 x 24 foot room.  
A few that I was looking into were:
ACI Saphires
Epos M5

This seems to be a great pricing on these speakers. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1145065696  90db sensitivity with only a 6.7" cone would be about right for 38W tube power.  Shipping from Singapore could be problematic but he is throwing in a pair of stands.  By the way, what is wrong with Onix reference 1 speakers that mate with the amp?

Woodsyi has a good suggestion.

There is a pair of ProAc Ref 8 listed here on a/c.

There are many more, but some to maybe consider:

Totem Mite
Silverline SR11
Green Mountain Europa
Aurum Leisure

The Onix Ref 1's are tremendous little speakers, and thanks to av123's utterly bizarre business practices their resale value is extremely low (certainly a good thing if you're buying used)... I've seen the Ref 1's go on agon for $400 in Rosewood, and about $575 in birdseye maple. These are unreal speakers for that kind of money, especially the BEM ones because I think they're about the best looking speaker this side of the B&W 805S in tigers eye.

Hi mang, good choice on the amplifier! check my old thread out, there's a lot of good suggestions there.  I was looking for speakers around the same price too.

You can buy the Alon Mini at the higher end of that price range brand new.

If you are near Philly I have some speakers priced low for a local sale, but if they were something you might want you would probably want to try your amp with them first. PSB Stratus Golds.... (sorry for the shameless plug)

Brakhage - I could just sell you the rest of my setup (I saw someone mention Aurum Cantus Leisures, which are what are in the system the P2 was in).  :)  Hopefully the P2 arrived in good shape.

Bohlender-Graebener Z7.

$800 or so new, usually under $600 used. Fantastic, and inexpensive. Absolute Sound's affordable loudspeaker of the year, last year I think.

My friend loves these with his 40 watt Jolida 707.

These things blew away, in every way, my old Vandersteen 1Cs that I spent more than $900 on more than 10 years ago. Another buddy agrees that his ProAc Response 1SC were bested by the Z7, and the ProAcs ran over $2000.

The Onix Ref 1s are a good pick - I like mine very much.  As for the bizarre business practice - I hear you.  I paid $1k for mine on b-stock in piano black before the SP3 deals began, and now I'll be lucky to get $500-600 for them a year later!

I am selling my Aurum Cantus Music Goddess speakers, but I would suggest restoring an older pair of AR speakers. I do not know if 39watts would work though. Workmanship is generally much superior to todays over priced doo....and quite frankly I do not see how you could find a better speaker than one of their old designs re-done (restored). I saw a design on the classic speaker pages about a gentleman who restored a AR with two 10" acoustic suspension woofers-2 6in.woofers and two cloth dome tweeters for 650. That particular speaker beats the pants off anything I have heard under 5000$ new, and some for far more cash,it would take patience however, to get just the right pair........Stay away from the limited life paper woofers however.....

I listen to a wide range of music from jazz to blues to rock.  

I normally listen at about 70db and do not use a subwoofer.  

Thanks to everyone for your sugestions.  This is a great resource and I appreciate the recommendations.

Check out the Magnepan MMG's for $550.  Fantastic speakers for the common man.  Thank Jim Winey in Minnesotaland for making being an audiophile affordable!
And they'll play 70db just fine! :lol:

Triangle Comete - Great for low level and I think the larger woofer has much better bass than the Titus.  I've owned the titus and they definitely need a sub.
