What percentage did your amp cost compared to your speakers?

Hi all,

Amps: Welborne Lab "Apollo 1.5"

$2900 pr. kit.

Speaker: 6" Fostex FE167E in DIY TQWT cab + Fostex FT17H helper/super horn tweeter.

About $400-500 pr.

Great SET+Single driver sound: Priceless

As for % between speaker and amps.... well that doesn't matter to me as long as the system sound great as a whole.

correction....

your amp is 56% more expensive than your speakers:

(7000-4500)/4500 = 56%

and,

your speakers are about 35% cheaper than your amp:

(7000-4500)/7000 = 36%

Tip: the "than" thing.....the thing being compared to...goes in denominator. Always.

I obviously have several systems but my main system that I listen to most often is:

Usher D2 Horn system - Retail $24,720
Musica Bella "Bella 25" P-P 300B 25 watt mono blocs- Retail $5,200 +/- (when they finally get released)

Does not include preamp which is usually the ModWright.

So I guess you could call it about 25% of the speakers.

Although this system is located in my showroom, I consider it my "personal" system. I have been discussing with my wife bringing the D2s home but settled on the fact they are still a bit big for our family room and with 2- 7 year olds and a 13 year old........ probably not a good idea. My original Response Audio Model 5 full range towers are still going strong after 9 years so they will stay at home.

The Model 5 speakers retailed for $4500 pr and are powered by a Jolida 1501RC retailing at $750. The Jolida was one of the very first in the country when they were released and still have the original tubes!

correction....

My ASL Hurricanes retail for $5K while my Eminent Technology 8s retail for $1830, so 173% more. My ratio is warped by the fabulous-sounding speakers that are quite inexpensive and inefficient and hence requiring lots of (vacuumtubed, in my case) power.

But WOW do I love the sound of my system.

Just reading through these answers quickly, and toting up the numbers in my head, I've come to the conclusion that 56.375% of the people pay 150% or more for their amp than their speakers. Then there's the 52.325% of people who exceed the cost of their amp with speakers costing in excess of 150%. But of course the extra 12.875% of the people have amp and speakers that each cost below $1000 (together or in combo) where the percentages get screwed up because small differences in numbers have a bigger result. Then there's the 3.25% of modders who can't decide whether to use the original retail price, the retail price plus component costs, or the "equivalent replacement cost" of the modded product.

All this goes to show is that I really don't know how to add, and that audiophiles go both ways (sexy beasts that we are).

Nice math in your head taking it down to a thousandth! I am in the camp that doesn't know how to price my equipment. There has been too many tweaks and mods that I lost track. Since I triamp I would say amps cost more. I am trying to do the math in my head but I can only do it rounding off to the hundreds.

Now that is a factor of 5 in our respective brain resolution power.

For me, I have completely lost track of how much I have spent on my projects. My numbers were back of the envelope (really in my head) calc's for how much things cost. I really couldn't tell you without a spreadsheet program.

my amps retail at 260% of the price of my speakers alone, and at 140% of speakers plus sub.
actual purchase price is 160% of speakers alone, 100% of speakers plus sub.
i am in love with my amps

Retail prices:

speakers..........$7100 (includes $800 veneer upgrade)
amps...............$5200

so my speakers are 37% pricier than my amps.

probably easiest way to express and visualize it is how much is spent on one for every dollar spent on the other.

I spent 73 cents on amps for every $ spent on speakers.

My amp retails for 2.5% of my speakers. Put another way, my speakers cost 40 times as much as my amp! What do I win?

I just got the VR-4jrs, so now I'm in the market for a new amp. I'm considering Channel Islands D-200s or Red Wine Audio's forthcoming Clari-T Signature-30 (monoblocks, maybe). I'll be running my RWA modified Squeezebox 3 straight to the amp(s).

AMP: NAD C372 integrated @ $650 (demo)
Speakers: VMPS RM40s @ $4000

My advice is to spend 75% of your budget on speakers and the rest on electronics. Don't waste your $$$ on expensive cables!

I paid approx. US$2k for my amp (Manley Stingray) and approx. US$4K for my speakers (Dynaudio Special 25).

So...50%.
