I was thinking about having RWA or Boulder do mods on mine but I decided to go with an outboard DAC. If I don't like what I hear with an outboard DAC I can always try something else. With a modded SB3 what you got is what you have to live with. RWA and Boulder I'm sure do outstanding mods and if I hadn't decided to go outboard DAC I wouldn't hesitate to have either of them mod my SB3.

You might want to get their digital mods, if you use your SB3 as a transport.  I am going to start modding my SB3 soon, to see if I can improve the digital out of it.

Did you see the this article?
http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0206/midmonth/bolder_modified_slimdevices_squeezebox.htm

It reviews the bolder upgrades to a SB, including the digital mods.  He has a stock and a modded SB, so he could compare them, something most people don't have the luxury of.

  I'm confused!!!
I thought the PC was the transport. I look at the squeeze box as like a preamp.

You can call it a transport, but in reality the FLAC or WAVE files are treated no different than regular data files. There's no jitter generated.

The biggest advantage, for me, is placing the computer away from the listening room. Any whining or clinking noises from Hard Drives, CD transports and power supplies are eliminated.

And yes, the SB3 should be Stereophile's product of the year. It's a revolutionary product!

The PC holds the files, and sends them to the SB.
I guess the combination of the PC and SB equal what you what traditionally call a digital transport.

I don't consider the SB a preamp if you have an external DAC, as the SB is feeding the DAC digital data.  This is what a transport would have done in the "old" days.

In other words, the chain is now
PC to SB to DAC to preamp

it used to be
transport to DAC to preamp
