Headphone Output From UCD?
« on: 9 Feb 2006, 03:25 pm »
Hi,

I would like to build a UCD amp and have a conventional headphone jack built in. A headphone jack ties the L and R ground together.

It is my understanding that the outputs on UCD modules do NOT need to be floated above ground and separated as with Tripath based amps. Is this correct?

Thanks a lot,

Paul

Sure... the Hypex modules use a split supply.    You have a negative, gnd, & positive supply.   The output GND reference is the same as the signal GND reference and you won't have a voltage potential from the negative loudspeaker post to the chassis ground (at least not much).     You can safely tie the ouput grounds together but I'm unsure of the effect on sound quality.   There are different issues with Class D amps vs. analog amps in this regard so I'd defer that type of question to Jan-Peter at Hypex to give you a 100% correct answer.  :-)

I just jumpered the output GNDs of my amp to check and I couldn't decern any audible difference.

Thanks Kevin. I just put in my order on your website for the modules.

I love the smell of burning solder :hyper:
