PMC with tube amplification
« on: 2 Feb 2006, 03:43 pm »
Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has successfully paired PMC FB1 or FB1+ with tube amplifier?
I am in search of a replacement for my speakers (B&W 704) and solid state amplification, after quite an extensive auditioning of a wide range of speakers and amplifiers over the past two months, I came to a conclusion that only tube amplification will give me the sound I am looking for (the emotional connection to music).
I did find this sound in PMC FB1 driven by an integrated tube amp, Korato Ikarus, so I was wondering if anyone is driving PMC with some tubes?
I would like to do a bit more investigation before I settle on an amplifier.
Beside PMC FB1 I also liked Living Voice Auditorium driven by Raysonic SP-120 tube integrated, but these speakers are more expensive and do not offer justifiable advantage over FB1 in my opinion, so for now I am geared towards FB1 (or FB1+ although did not hear them yet) with yet to be determined tube integrated amp.
If you are not familiar with Korato, it sports custom made transformers, Van den Hul point to point wiring, Alps volume potentiometer, and KT-90 tubes in push-pull rated at 2X50W.
I have not heard hybrid amps, specifically there is one from Jolida, JD 1703A with 12AX7A input tubes and mosfet output, is this worth looking into it from tube lover perspective?
The limiting factor is availability of the gear in Toronto area, must be able to hear it.

Ovation Audio in Aurora carries PMC as well as tube products. We had a pair of our proto-type hybrid mono blocks in there for a while, but have brought them back to the "lab" for some newly found upgrades.

If there's a Jolida dealer near you that carries the full line, you really ought to hear the JD-801A integrated. 70 watts/140 watts peak, with 6550/KT88 output. This is a really excellent performer, and is a bargain at less than $1500 USD. The best amp they make, short of the following:

And if your budget allows it, have a listen to the JD-3000 monoblocks, 200 watts with the 211 power tube, but these amps run $5000.
