Does anyone know a local source for Owens Corning rigid fiberglass ceiling tiles; 'OC703'?  I keep meaning to research this but I'm not really sure where to look.

I've already got some panels made and they're just too thin.  I need to make bass traps and get moving on the sound room project.

Thanks in advance,
Carl

Carl,

Unfortunately, I don't remember where, but I do know that (several years ago) the guys at Audio Advice got theirs from a supplier in Raleigh. You might want to check with them, to see if they can enlighten you.

I could use some of those myself.

Carl...if you find something interesting there, then let me know...maybe we could combine orders, and save on shipping.

OK.. well, after some digging I found a place not too far down the road that has it in stock.  I'm going to pick it up tomorrow.
I'm getting 'faced' OC703 because 'faced' is what they stock.  You can get it 'unfaced' if you're willing to wait a while. (I'm not)

It comes in cartons of 6 2' x 4' panels and is 2" thick.  I'm buying 2 cases to build traps at 4" thick for the rear corners.. and maybe the front... we'll see if I've got room with my weird little room.  I'll at least have the rear wall nicely covered.  I might buy a 3rd carton to make a few more just for 'fun'. ;)

The name of the place is 'North Brothers' in Raleigh, NC.  It's $1.20 per square foot so, 48sf x 1.2 = $57.60 per carton... which would make 3 4" 2x4' bass traps.  Of course, I'm still going to need fabric and to build frames of some sort to put these in and mount them securely.

Anyway, just thought I'd share what I know if anyone else needs it.  If you need/want some, let me know via PM by tomorrow morning and I can pick up a little extra.

Thanks,
Carl

I know you can go to the Acoustics Circle and (eventually) find a lot of this information, but I thought I would point the way to some information.

FYI.. I picked up the insulation yesterday.. and just a warning; it STINKS.  It smells like formaldehyde and fish sauce.  Yuckola.  I think I'll be using a whole bottle of 'Fabreeze' on them. ;)

So, I spent $120 w/ tax on it and another $100 at Lowe's on lumber, brackets, a couple of tools, etc.. I might need some material.  Fancy stuff is $7/yd and I'd need about 9 yds. So, 6 bass-trap panels will end up costing about $265 (minus tools).  It adds up fast to ~ $45 PER 2x4' panel.  When I add my time, it would have been about the same price to buy them assembled.  The real value is that I can pick out a fabric with my wife.  Oh, and a couple or few new tools is always nice. ;)

Carl,

Let us know how your project turns out...I probably need to do some room treatment one of these days, but I still have much remodeling work to do...first.

Carl,
Interested in your progress.  We'll have to get together over there soon. You still have the TacT for measurement purposes?

I have the TacT 2.0RCS and S2150 amp now... The 2150x didn't work out so I just bought the preamp/amp combo.  I plan to do some upgrades to them and call it a day on gear... I'm quite pleased with it in stock form... but I'd like to get that extra 'something'.. ;)

The room just sounds tremendous now.  I should have a little get together this weekend or next... I have nothing happening those weekends.  I have the SB3 modified vs. unmodified comparison yet to do... and I have a bunch of power supplies to compare also.

Following that, in March I plan to have a meet to hear the SP Tech Timepiece 2.1 speakers... and whatever else I've secured to compare. :)

Give me a call/PM/whatever whenever... ;)
