I have a universal player that I will be building my hagclock into eventually and I am wondering if I can use the can style clock crytal that is on my CDP board as the crystal to build into my hagclock?

Yes, you can usually use the xtal removed from the player as the xtal in HAGCLOCK.  There might be an odd-ball player out there using a series-mode xtal, but I'm not aware of any.  Virtually all are Pierce.  If your circuit looks like what is in the manual, you'll be fine.
