I always loved the Ipod, its design and idea but was never big into headphones, so when I read about the Imod I just had to give it a try: Bought a used 4th gen. Ipod and sent it to Vinnie. Finally having a good excuse to get one I would not have been too dissappointed with only a little improvement. But I am right now listening to this little bastard and have to say it really is shockingly good for what it is! Swapping back and forth between an unmodded and Vinnies 4th Gen Ipod the improvement is very noticeable: Much dryer, more defined bass and more room 'between the instruments'.  So far the step up from the unmodded one to this feels like the difference between the modded one and my CD front (Rega Planet/Ack D'Ack)...with a digital interconnect that alone costs as much as the whole mod incl battery change...more to come when I will have passed the burn-in mark (Vinnie said around 200hrs).

My iPod sounded pretty lousy at first and it really did take 200 hours for it to come into its own. That amazed me, because I never really believed any component could change that much due to capacitor burn-in. Anyway, I predict that in two weeks you'll find the iPod far surpassing your digital front end, which will soon find its way to Audiogon .

Glad to hear that you both are enjoying your iMod as much as I am!  Thanks for posting your feedback.

Gary is right about those Black Gates taking a while (around 200 hours is typical) to break in and sound their best, but you'll know it when they do because the little iMod ends up sounding very, very musical and can compete with some expensive dedicated CDPs.

Hello-well I took my 60GB Video 5G iPod back to Best Buy today after owning it for 34 days,no hassle return,when asked why I was returning it I said it was causing me to go deaf! LOL,

actually I said it was giving me a headache and I wanted a Redwine iMod. I got my money back with zero problems even refunded my 3 yr. Best Buy warranty.

So I flew over to Circuit City and snagged a brand new iPod 60GB Photo 4th Gen to be iModded.
With the 5G video I was using a line out Turbo Dock II which is extremely well made and sounds much better than those sendstation line outs.Coupled to a Ray Samuels Hornet amp.
Well I'll be happy to say goodbye to line out dock adapters after I get my Redwine iMod and I'm hoping for sound that won't sound so grainy or hashy.

Hiya Vinnie,still loving the iMod! still burning in the Black Gates,I'll post detailed summary of the fantastic sound after 200 hours,only been about 50 hours so far.

I recently bought a 60 GB iPod to have Vinnie modify. I tried it out by loading 4 CDs and played it both through my system and through earbuds. It sounded OK, so I put it away to wait for Vinnie to get to his new digs.

A few days later I take it out of the drawer and it's dead. I plug it in, reset it, and charge it up. The next day it runs out of power after 2 hours of use. I plug it in and charge it over night. The next day it's dead.

Back to Apple it goes, and I'm waiting for it to come back.

A word of caution. Make SURE your iPod is OK before sending it to Vinnie. I expect that this was just a bad battery, but I'm really glad I didn't have to send Vinnie a questionable unit with a battery and the hope that it would be OK.

Can't wait to get it back and send it for the iMod.

I'm loving my iMod-ed 60GB Photo,it has about 75-100 hours of burn in so far. Sounding better each day! I bought one of those power sticks for $20 it takes 4-AA's and charges the ipod,using NiMah batteries in it.
