Need Help Choosing Sub for Magnepan Home Theater
« on: 30 Jan 2006, 09:02 pm »
I need advice on a sub for my Maggie home theater. I have 1.6s for the front and MG12s in the rear. I have narrowed my selection to either the Nola Thunderbolt III or an SVS Ultra. I listen to music as much as Movies.
Any and all advice is welcome.

Thanks folks..!!

I haven't heard your choices so I can't comment on them.
I use an REL strata 3 with MG12's  in the front, and MMGW's for rear. Maybe more of a music sub rather than a HT sub, sealed w/ a 10 inch driver. One thing I like is the dual inputs. Speaker level for the music side, the MG12's are run full range, and the sub fills in under. Low level LFE input for HT where the pre/pro crosses over the MG12's at 80hz. separate volume controls for each input.  You can cross it over very low with a steep slope, great for maggies.
Good luck, Ryan

My system uses MG1.6s for the fronts, MMGC for the center, and MMGs for the rears.   I've tried a couple different subwoofers - a Hsu Research STF2 and a home built sonotube sub with 15 inch driver.     The STF2 sounded ok but doesn't go ridiculously low - which is the whole point of a subwoofer :)  The sonotub sub goes quite low but doesn't blend well and has to be crossed over quite low  to keep from muddying up the wonderful maggie dipole bass.   After switching to biamping my 1.6s, I decided that the 1.6s no longer needed a subwoofer when listening to music - they are still going strong down at 40 Hz.   The subwoofer still makes a difference for HT though.

Thanks guys for your insightful advice. I think I will go with the Nola.
