Late Night Confessions of a Zu Druid Owner
« on: 27 Jan 2006, 11:53 pm »
O.K., so it's only the afternoon , but let it hereby be known that I do love my Druids...yes, those black and silver pointy monoliths that look like they would be more at home in Lyle Alzado's basement rec room than my desert toned livingroom with the dried rattlesnake skins and beautiful rocks I have found in the desert and carried home and placed on my little hearth...and no, I have not yet had the time to explore the bass possibilities of my dear Druids, like raising them up a bit from the floor, and so I'm running a (cheap) Athena subwoofer that my friend Rich lent me, and (Confession #1) it actually sounds really good. It doesn't sound too slow (like many would claim!), plus I can dial in the crossover and volume of the sub to suit my tastes...OK, so now you all must be thinking I'm an audiophilistine, and perhaps that is true, for here is my next confession (Confession #2)...

Some time ago, I acquired some...Radioshack Supertweeters, and I piggybacked 'em like you're supposed to on the speaker posts of the Druids, and set those little cheapies on top of my Druids...I must admit, they look like they belong there, cause they too are black and have a little silver pointy thing in the middle...and you know what?... it too sounds really good...ads some detail and fullness to the top end...yes, yes, I know, the Druids already have a supertweet, but I stuck my hairy philistinic ear up to it when it was playing, and only the tiniest of little scratchy sounds was emanating from my beloved ebony obelisks, while the Radioshack appendages had much fuller, louder scratchy sounds coming forth...OK, I know what you're thinking, this guy doesn't understand the SuperTweeter Phenomenon...but, yes, I know the Druid's tweet range is like, 22-25kHz, or something, and the RS bird
chirps at like, 8,000-25,000 Hz, so ok, I KNOW that, but my point being, with all respect to Sean at Zu, it sounds really really good.

Sometimes I point the tweeters at the back wall, or set them behind the speakers on the floor, but mostly I set the little things on top of my obsidian collonades and just, well, enjoy the music...now, I know these "confessions", if I may, perhaps may reveal me in a less than shining light here at the Audiocircle, and I now live in (slight) fear that a Zu truck may arrive at my desert domicile sometime soon to collect my prized and beloved raven pilasters, but so be it! The truth must be told, and I now lay these audacious statements before the circle and await my reprobation.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you are allowed to use more than 3 metaphors per post.
Let's see -
1) black and silver pointy monoliths
2) ebony obelisks (rolls off the tongue real nice)
3) obsidian collonades
4) (!) raven pilasters
...of course that would mean you would have to leave one out, and that wouldn't do. Spoil the whole perfect post!

I guess when you live out in the desert you can make up your own rules.

Saw a movie last night that made me feel like moving to New Mexico. It was called "Off the Map".

My good Man! Metaphors---indeed!

I'll have you know that I now am admiring my lovely Druidinis as they spew forth beautiful tones, the morning sun from my clerestory windows glinting off the buttons of their motorcycle-jacket finish right into the infant tear beginning to form at the corner of my eye as I listen to the passionate sounds of Keith Jarrett's Paris Concert (the likes of which shall never be repeated, in this world nor the next), and you, sir, believe I would stoop to lowly metaphor, when mere words are not enough to describe the sonic bliss that Zu (and Radio Shack for that matter, and here I refer you to my earlier post), hath provided me at relatively minor economic relinquishment. My earlier struggles to describe those Pillars of Musical Truth are similes, no more, no less; and certainly do not descend to the level of mere metaphor. Indeed!!

I say if you have improved the sound of your Druids with RS supertweeters
go ahead and enjoy the results and let the purists be damned. Your RS supertweeters  are a lot cheaper than some approaches I have seen
other Druid owners use to achieve audio nirvana.

'Off the Map' indeed--a FINE motion picture.  Joan Allen is one of our finest actors and was just as good in 'The Upside of Anger' with Kevin Costner.

srale, your profile is virtually empty.  Where are you and with what do you drive your Druids?  A friend and I spent a lot of time in the Zu rooms at this January's ICES.

I came across this ad for the Zu Druid's on Audiogon..... http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1145986478 ...the speakers have been sold.
Had a good laugh as I read his reason for selling..... [/list:u]

Why, then, am I selling? WAF! My wife says that these black monoliths look like two big cyclops looking at her, and it creeps her out! She right you know. I can't have two cyclops checking out my wife when I'm not home. God only knows what I'll walk into someday when I come home from work.
