EMPIRE 598 III TROUBADOR
« on: 21 Jan 2006, 12:06 am »
I have this turntable I acquired in Germany, 1975, and it came as a 220v, 50 cycle A.C. model convertable to 115v A.C. 60cycles...but I have lost the conversion instructions.   They entailed soldering the power wire on the motor in a different position...to best of my recollection. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. If need be, I would gladly purchase the 115v moter. Thanks.

I would be surprised if you could convert it.  Wiring it up differently may take care of the different voltages, but this is a synchronous motor, which means the speed depends on the AC frequency.  In other words, I would expect it to run faster at 60HZ than 50HZ.

although this is months old, i thought i'd reply for future inquisitors... It seems that to convert it from the 220v 50Hz you need to buy the 110/60hz motor.  There is a guy on ebay that seems to rebuild the empires and he had some of these motors NOS last time I looked through his stuff.

ah, you are still looking!  If it helps, i found him by searching ebay for empire 598.  seems like he had a couple things up but if you look at his answers to bidders questions it becomes apparent that he has spare parts for the empires for sale.  He mentioned that he's making replica lids for the 598's also.  Mine is missing, so if the price isn't insane, I might look into that.
